About the Role

For decades, Alcoa has been delivering high quality rehabilitation within the Jarrah Forest, with approximately 21,500 hectares of rehabilitation undertaken since commencement of mining operations in the 1960's. In support of continuous improvement in Mining and environmental performance, an exciting opportunity exists to join our Environmental Research team and contribute towards making a positive difference within our communities.

As the Environmental Research Technician, you will play a crucial role in supporting our environmental research initiatives and will be involved in various aspects of fieldwork and data collection. Based at Alcoa's Huntly Central location and reporting to our Environmental Research Scientists, you will be collaborating on field trials where your day-to-day activities will encompass a range of environmental themes of soils, water, plants, and animals which will include:

  • Collecting plant and soil samples and accurately recording data.

  • Marking out and monitoring flora trials whilst identifying seedlings.

  • Setting up fauna monitoring including various trap types, involving handling animals for measurements, marking and fitting radio collars.

  • Conducting habitat assessments, that will involve preparing bait and setting up camera traps.

  • Overall data entry and management and managing contractors involved in research activities.

What you can bring to the role

  • Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science or Management, Biology, Zoology, Botany, or related discipline.

  • Basic knowledge of animal science, plant science, soil science, and/or restoration ecology.

  • An ability to undertake fieldwork on a regular basis.

  • Proven experience in environmental research or related field.

  • Strong organisational skills with attention to detail.

  • Initiative and focus on improvements with a collaborative work approach.

  • A manual licence with 4WD exposure.
