THE ROLE
The Centre of Excellence in the Field Application Engineering group is looking for a Solution Architect to define and drive architecture for scalable data platforms and cloud-native services exploiting the AMD technologies. This role requires strong expertise in database technologies, distributed data management, cloud infrastructure, and CPU/system architecture, with a focus on delivering solutions optimized for performance, scalability, resiliency, security, and cost efficiency.
The ideal candidate brings architectural leadership and hands-on technical depth across modern data platforms, cloud services, and compute-efficient system design. You will work across software, infrastructure, DevOps, and data teams to translate business and technical requirements into production-ready solutions aligned with AMD engineering standards.
THE PERSON
You are a strong systems thinker with deep technical knowledge in CPU architecture, cloud platforms with databases and application platforms. You are comfortable driving architectural trade-offs across storage, networking, compute, and software layers, and you have practical experience optimizing systems using knowledge of modern CPU and memory architecture. You communicate clearly, influence effectively across teams, and bring disciplined engineering judgment to complex platform decisions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Define end-to-end architecture for data-intensive and compute-intensive platforms spanning services, databases, storage, cloud infrastructure, security, observability, and operations.
- Optimize database platforms across relational, NoSQL, cache, analytical, time-series, and vector databases for transactional, analytical, and AI-driven workloads.
- Drive data management architecture including ingestion, transformation, storage, metadata, lineage, governance, retention, archival, backup, and disaster recovery.
- Define schema design, indexing, partitioning, sharding, replication, caching, and access patterns to meet performance, availability, and scale requirements.
- Evaluate and select data and storage technologies based on workload profile, concurrency, latency, consistency, growth, recoverability, and operational complexity.
- Design cloud-native, hybrid, and multi-cloud architectures using AWS, Azure, and/or GCP, including compute, storage, networking, IAM, Kubernetes, containers, and infrastructure-as-code.
- Architect platforms for high-throughput and high-performance workloads running on modern server infrastructure, including systems optimized for AMD EPYC™ processor-based environments.
- Apply knowledge of CPU and system architecture—including cache hierarchy, NUMA, memory bandwidth, multithreading, SIMD/vectorization, and processor topology—to workload placement, tuning, and capacity planning.
- Lead performance analysis and optimization across application, database, and infrastructure layers using tools such as AMD uProf, perf, and cloud monitoring platforms.
- Define non-functional requirements and architecture guardrails for scalability, reliability, recoverability, maintainability, security, and operational readiness.
- Lead architecture reviews, design discussions, and technical trade-off analysis; document decisions and guide engineering teams through execution.
- Evaluate new technologies across databases, cloud platforms, distributed systems, and HPC infrastructure to improve platform capability and efficiency.
- Good level of English, both written and spoken
- Ability to travel, circa 20% including international travel within Asia, Europe and North America
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or related field.
- 8+ years of experience in solution architecture, software architecture, platform engineering, or senior engineering roles with ownership of production systems.
- Strong experience designing database and data platform architecture in enterprise-scale or distributed environments.
- Deep knowledge of database technologies including PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, MongoDB, Cassandra, Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, data warehouse/lakehouse platforms, and related storage architectures.
- Expertise in data modeling, query optimization, indexing, partitioning, replication, high availability, backup/recovery, and database performance troubleshooting.
- Strong experience with cloud architecture on AWS, Azure, and/or GCP, including managed data services, networking, security, Kubernetes, containers, and infrastructure automation.
- Experience designing hybrid or multi-cloud data platforms with attention to resiliency, governance, and data movement across environments.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, concurrency, consistency, asynchronous processing, and service-oriented or event-driven architectures.
- Practical understanding of server CPU architecture and system performance, including x86-64 platforms, memory hierarchy, cache behavior, thread scaling, and bottleneck analysis.
- Experience using profiling, benchmarking, and observability tools to improve system and database performance in production environments.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively across engineering, infrastructure, product, and leadership teams.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Experience with AMD EPYC™ processors, CPU-aware workload optimization, or tuning for memory-intensive and compute-intensive server workloads.
- Experience with distributed compute systems, low-latency platforms, or large-scale data processing environments.
- Familiarity with cloud cost optimization, workload rightsizing, and performance-per-dollar analysis.
- Experience with streaming and large-scale data processing technologies such as Kafka, Spark, Flink, Delta Lake, Iceberg, or similar.
- Experience with vector databases, retrieval systems, and data platforms supporting AI/ML workloads.
- Knowledge of data governance, privacy, compliance, and enterprise data security practices.
