Description

ADVANCE YOUR CAREER. ADVANCE THE WORLD.

At AMD, we believe technology has the power to solve the world's most important challenges. From advancing healthcare and scientific discovery to powering AI and the technologies people rely on every day, innovation at AMD is shaping the future.

Whether you're designing next-gen processors, enabling AI breakthroughs, or bringing leading edge products to market, every role at AMD contributes to something bigger — technology that moves the world forward. Join us and, together, we'll advance your career.

THE ROLE

AMD is seeking a Lead Engineer, Behind-the-Meter Power Infrastructure to act as a client representative and technical validation lead for gas-to-power and behind-the-meter data center power projects.

In this role, you will review and validate end-to-end power solutions from gas supply and pipeline infrastructure through generation, alternators, BESS, substations, medium-voltage distribution, protection systems, and final delivery to the data center load. You will collaborate with developers, EPCs, utilities, gas suppliers, OEMs, consultants, and internal AMD teams to determine whether proposed solutions are technically sound, schedule-realistic, aligned with applicable permitting requirements, and capable of reaching commercial operation.

THE PERSON

The ideal candidate is an experienced power infrastructure technical leader with demonstrated judgment from an owner/client perspective. You understand how gas supply, permitting, generation, electrical collection, substations, controls, and commissioning come together to deliver reliable power to a mission-critical data center.

You can independently evaluate assumptions, constructively identify design and schedule gaps, and translate complex technical risks into clear, evidence-based recommendations for technical and nontechnical stakeholders.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Act as AMD's technical client representative for behind-the-meter power infrastructure projects.
  • Validate the full power chain from gas supply, pipeline lateral, easements, gas quality, fuel conditioning, and gas distribution through generation and electrical delivery.
  • Review reciprocating engine, turbine, alternator, BESS, switchgear, transformer, substation, and protection-system designs.
  • Assess whether proposed power solutions can meet data center load, redundancy, power-quality, maintainability, reliability, and commercial operation requirements.
  • Review single-line diagrams, gas-flow diagrams, basis-of-design documents, permit matrices, equipment specifications, commissioning plans, and project schedules.
  • Validate gas supply assumptions, pipeline routes, right-of-way and easement status, crossing permits, gas pressure, gas quality, and backup fuel strategies.
  • Evaluate generator sizing, derating, heat rate, emissions controls, alternator performance, paralleling switchgear, and maintenance strategies.
  • Review medium-voltage and high-voltage architecture, including MV collectors, main power transformers, substations, ring bus design, relay protection, grounding, and islanding logic.
  • Support review of grid-forming BESS, load-step response, dynamic stability, frequency control, harmonic performance, and AI workload transient behavior.
  • Identify missing permits, unresolved approvals, construction-sequencing risks, equipment lead-time risks, and commissioning gaps.
  • Define technical decision points for design freeze, permit clearance, initial gas delivery, initial generator operation, synchronization, load testing, islanding, failover testing, and commercial operation.
  • Prepare clear technical risk summaries, executive briefings, open-item trackers, and recommendations regarding project readiness and conditions required to proceed.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in power generation, data center power infrastructure, gas-fired generation, utility systems, microgrids, industrial energy projects, or comparable complex power infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of natural gas infrastructure, including pipeline interconnects, laterals, metering stations, gas quality, pressure regulation, fuel conditioning, easements, right-of-way, and crossing permits.
  • Experience with reciprocating generators, gas turbines, alternators, paralleling switchgear, emissions-control systems, continuous emissions monitoring systems, and plant commissioning, or comparable generation technologies.
  • Knowledge of BESS, grid-forming inverters, islanded power systems, black start, load shedding, and non-export controls.
  • Experience reviewing medium-voltage and high-voltage systems, including 13.8 kV, 34.5 kV, 138 kV, 230 kV, 345 kV, or comparable infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with substations, main power transformers, switchgear, relays, short-circuit studies, protection coordination, arc-flash studies, grounding, and synchronization.
  • Ability to review and interpret load-flow, dynamic stability, electromagnetic transient (EMT), rate-of-change-of-frequency (RoCoF), frequency-nadir, and harmonic studies.
  • Working knowledge of applicable permitting and regulatory requirements for areas such as air emissions, stormwater, pipelines, road and rail crossings, fire protection, hazardous materials, LNG, and utility interconnection.
  • Experience collaborating with EPCs, developers, utilities, gas suppliers, OEMs, environmental consultants, construction teams, and other relevant project stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical risks clearly and effectively to engineering and non-engineering stakeholders, including executives, legal, procurement, and finance teams.

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Energy Engineering, Civil Engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent relevant experience in complex power or infrastructure projects.
  • Professional Engineer license preferred but not required unless necessary for specific job responsibilities.
  • Equivalent experience in large-scale power generation, utility, data center, industrial infrastructure, or comparable projects will be considered.

This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
