THE ROLE:

We are seeking a senior engineering manager to lead our North American AI team within the Field Application Organisation. The role broadly involves managing a team that

  • works with customers and partners in support of RFP-driven requests. Providing hands-on support to customers and partners to enable their AI workloads to run on AMD ‘Instinct' GPUs. Delivering workshops and training.
  • broader engineering investigations to understand both performance and characteristic performance across popular and customer-specific training and inference workloads. Understand competitive positioning
  • creating a body of technical documentation of AI performance on AMD hardware to support the Field Application team, partners, and customers

You will be steering a team of senior FAE AI specialists working on some of the biggest names in Silicon Valley. Therefore the successful candidate will have already managed a number of direct reports in an engineering team.

You will be reporting to Senior Director level and will have direct exposure to senior management up to executive level on a weekly basis, talking through the accounts that your team is working on. You will ensure strong account qualification and will capture risks/blockers and seek to manage them to through your internal network within AMD.

The role is based within North America and will require some travel to customers and conferences both nationally and internationally.

  • Established technical track record as a manager
  • Understands AI requirements for customers: systems, software, and AI models
  • Strong capability to manage customers and overcome challenges
  • Strong positive can-do attitude willing to do what is necessary and lead others in the wider FAE team and other colleagues. Continually proactive.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with crisp reporting upwards
  • Ability to travel both domestic and international, approximately 10-20% over a year

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support winning new AI business. Strong ability to influence customer, qualification and Proof of Concept definition through your team. Supporting AMD partners in pursuit of win
  • Working closely with the business owners to VP level on your teams accounts. Building a strong engineering network within AMD to resolve issue
  • ‘Owns the accounts'. Monitoring of progress on accounts within your team on recurring basis. Understanding strengths, weaknesses, and key issues. Seeking progress within your AMD network. Providing weekly readouts to the business.
  • Ensuring your team perform Proof of Concepts and demonstrate first degree of viability to customer/AMD engineering; documents work through whitepapers, ROCm blogs; meeting sales and POC targets
  • Proactive engagement across AMD teams: GPU Business Unit, Engineering, Architecture, Platform, Software, and Product Development teams providing feedback and leadership from the field on requirements.
  • Assist in creating Total Cost of Ownership models to aid pricing with bid desk
  • Runs to the problem and proactively assists colleagues and other teams

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Managed a technical team of engineers.
  • Strong technical program management, both managing accounts and also ‘reporting upwards' to your management chain
  • Presales experience
  • Exposure to AMD/Nvidia/Intel data centre GPUs for AI workloads
  • Experience with Cloud Service Providers e.g. Azure, AWS, Oracle clouds, a
  • ‘Hands-on' AI background. Understands popular models (any of: LLM, RAG, image recognition, recommendation engines) the AI software stack and how to run models on bare-metal, within k8 or virtualized environments.
  • Understanding system level hardware design and its impact on performance
  • Understand how the software stack affects performance: frameworks, precision,  libraries, and other accompanying middleware applications
  • Customer-facing experience. Strong presentation skills

Nice to Have:

  • Demonstrated experience leading a team that won in excess of 1000 GPUs within an AI Enterprise environment
  • Experience with Nvidia GPUs and CUDA
  • Hands-on AI experience within automotive, finance, enterprise, defense verticals
  • Programming experience with any of HIP, CUDA, Python, C/C++, Fortran, OpenACC, OpenMP, pSTL
  • Government level security clearance

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

  • Bachelors' Degree in a technical field (Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics) preferred

LOCATION:

Austin Texas. Preference for Eastern and Central time-zones but West Coast possible.
