Job Description
BAE Systems has a job opening for a Software Engineering Tools DevOps administrator. As a key member of the Software Engineering Tools team, the DevOps administrator will work closely with the Platform Engineering (PE) group that manages an on-premises Virtual Cloud Computing Center (VC3). The Software Engineering Tools team seeks a motivated DevOps Technical Support Administrator to tackle the task of automating reliable, sustainable, and optimized services for bringing modernized, cloud native compute technologies into closed area environments ranging from large, multi-site networks to small air-gapped environments. Your efforts on our cloud-based systems ensures application security, scalability, and reliability across multiple security enclaves to support the Software Engineering Digital Ecosystem. Your experience and passion for DevOps practices and tools will be essential in automating processes, streamlining deployments, providing disaster recovery and improving the overall efficiency of our services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the focal point for bringing modernized, cloud native compute technologies into BAE closed area environments.
  • Collaborate with the Platform Engineering and Closed Room Operations/Infrastructure teams to define infrastructure requirements, understand application needs, optimize system performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines for seamless application deployment and continuous integration using industry-standard tools and frameworks.
  • Work in closed area environments to deploy tools and train administrators on support and operations activities.
  • Automate infrastructure provisioning, configuration management, and monitoring using tools such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef, or similar technologies.
  • Monitor system performance, conduct root cause analysis, and implement optimizations to enhance system availability, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production incidents related to performance, availability, infrastructure, networking, and application deployment in a timely manner.
  • Provide close coordination with security -- ISSE's, ISSM's, ISSO's -- ensuring compliance and auditability.
  • Participate in service improvement initiatives, including identifying opportunities for service optimization and cost reduction.
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices in DevOps to continuously improve the infrastructure and development processes.
  • Work with Engineering to refine requirements into an IT plan related to modernization and DevOps needs to include modernized workloads, cloud native computing, on premise cloud, containerization, etc.
  • Create and maintain documentation for engineering application installations and upgrades.
  • Assist with incident response and problem management to minimize service downtime and ensure swift recovery from interruptions.
  • Support users in a timely manner using ServiceNow Help Desk ticketing system.
  • Ensure compliance with security and regulatory requirements.

The Software Engineering Tools DevOps Administrator will be expected to demonstrate a high level of technical expertise, strong troubleshooting skills, attention to detail, solid leadership skills, a customer-focused attitude, a passion to learn, self-motivated and work well in teams. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of delivering high-quality services in a cloud-based ecosystem and will be able to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. You will need to be comfortable working with various stakeholders, including tenants, developers, and managers, and will have strong communication and collaboration skills. The DevOps Administrator will have an understanding of cloud infrastructure and the ability to bridge between development and operations. Required Education, Experience, & Skills
Required Skills:
  • Ability to obtain a Secret clearance and CompTIA Security+ or equivalent certification within 6 months of hire
  • Proven experience as a DevOps Engineer or a similar role
  • Knowledge of on-premises cloud infrastructure technologies, such as OpenStack, VMware, or Azure Stack
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation using languages like Python, Bash, or PowerShell
  • Strong understanding of cloud services including virtualization, containerization, and related architectural principles
  • Familiarity with automation toolkits such as Ansible, Terraform, or Packer
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD tools like GitLab and understand version control and git workflows
  • Understanding of networking concepts, TCP/IP, DNS, load balancing, and firewall configuration
  • Knowledge of Linux/Unix systems administration and troubleshooting
  • Familiarity with monitoring tools and frameworks (e.g., Nagios, Prometheus, ELK stack)
  • Working experience with Kubernetes and other containerization technologies
  • Occasional off-hour response to outages and subsequent service restoration efforts
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Strong understanding of security and regulatory compliance requirements
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work effectively in a team
  • Exhibit sound judgement, initiative and self-motivation and able to complete tasks with minimal supervision
  • Close collaboration with peers, Platform Engineering, Engineering, various stakeholders and managers is essential


Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
Preferred
  • A Security+ or equivalent certification
  • Experience deploying SaaS and PaaS services for use by other users
  • Having a TS/SC clearance
  • Experience working in a customer service organization to resolve issues experienced by users
  • Kubernetes certifications such as CKAD, CKA, or CKS
  • Conducting zero downtime Kubernetes upgrades
  • General understanding of Engineering disciplines and tools

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a DevOps Engineer or similar role with on-premise cloud environments


Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $112420 - $191070

Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
