Position Summary South Seattle College is looking to hire a Full-Time, Tenure Track Counselor. The salary range for this position is $92,481-$109,526. Please note that initial salary placement for new faculty is generally at Step 11 ($92,481 annually). Application and all required materials must be submitted to be considered. Overview Under the supervision of the Vice President of Student Success South Seattle Counseling is seeking applicants for a full-time tenured counseling faculty member beginning Fall quarter 2026. South Seattle College has a long history of providing counseling services to a diverse student population, with a goal of supporting students to enter, persist, and succeed in college. To meet these goals counselors use: multiple methods (personal, career, and educational counseling, teaching, providing outreach/workshops, consulting) focused on multiple populations (individual students, student groups, faculty and staff, campus culture) to achieve multiple intentions (affirming cultural diversity, providing crisis intervention and referral, helping students identify and develop educational and career goals, addressing individual and institutional barriers to success, and increasing life and study skills). This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement with representation by American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Seattle and is subject to union shop provisions. What You Will Be Working On: Counseling Duties:
- Provide short-term, culturally competent, individual counseling to ethically and effectively help students identify counseling concerns, establish goals and in a supportive working alliance, provide personal, educational, career counseling interventions, and provide referrals for students.
- Use culturally responsive counseling modalities to help historically and systemically oppressed student populations navigate obstacles they may experience in college (e.g. neuro-diverse learners, students of color, first-generation college students, LGBTQIA, veterans, English language learners, etc.).
- Provide brief crisis response and support for students experiencing a mental health crisis or students experience acute/ongoing emotional concerns, refer students to appropriate agencies, and consult with campus employees about how to manage crisis situations.
- Provide counseling to assist students with identifying and resolving barriers that affect their educational development, collaborating with other campus offices to facilitate access to services.
- Provide counseling, intervention, and guidance for students on academic alert, probation, and/or suspension.
- Provide career counseling to help students identify barriers to decision making, support career exploration, and help integrate career goals into their educational planning process.
- Administer and interpret assessments and career interest inventories that help students clarify personality preferences, interests, skills, values, learning styles, abilities, etc.
- Provide consultation to staff, faculty and the campus community regarding how to assist students and other issues impacting student success.
- Foster a positive, caring, equitable learning environment rooted in antiracist and anti-oppressive pedagogy where all students have opportunities to be successful learners.
- Teach Human Development Courses (HDC) such as Orientation to College Success, Stress Management, Career Planning, etc.
- Participate in on-going curriculum development, revision, and implementation that incorporates multi-cultural perspectives and aligns with accessibility requirements.
- Create and deliver workshops/presentations within ethical parameters, educating faculty and staff on ways to support students experiencing mental health crisis within ethical parameters.
- Conduct outreach activities and workshops to students in skill areas such as: time and stress management, goal setting, emotional regulation, identity development, program pathway exploration, etc.
- Actively participate in college governance and other institutional initiatives (i.e. Communication Awareness Referral Education (CARE) Team, Strategic Advisory Committee, Curriculum and Instruction (CIC), etc.).
- Co-facilitate South¿s Communication Awareness Referral Education (CARE) Team.
- Engage in ongoing professional development activities.
- Collaborate with campus organizations to increase student retention.
- Use technology to provide students with counseling information and referral programs.
- Contribute and support Counseling mission and goals.
- Perform related duties.
- Master's or Doctoral degree from an accredited institution in Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Educational Psychology, Educational Counseling, Social Work or related field. Graduate coursework must include counseling theory and practice, testing and measurements, career development counseling theory, multi-cultural counseling, ethics, and supervised practicum or related coursework aligned with degree in qualifying field.
- Eligible for or licensed as a Washington state Mental Health Counselor, Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist, Psychologist, related professional Washington state licensure, or certification as an Agency Affiliated Counselor.
- Two years full-time (or equivalent) counseling experience.
- Demonstrated experience, knowledge, and skills supporting marginalized students' increased access to learning in counseling and teaching environments.
- Demonstrated skills in educational, career and personal counseling, group counseling, and consulting with other members of an organizational team.
- Experience selecting and interpreting career-related assessments.
- Knowledge of assessment and diagnostic tools.
- Encounters frequent interruptions throughout the workday.
- Is regularly required to provide 1:1 support, present to small groups, and work at a computer exercising repetitive hand motion with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Typically works in an office environment and uses a computer, telephone and other office equipment as needed to perform duties. The noise level in the work environment is typical of that of an office.
- Ability to perform range of physical motions, exerting up to 25 pounds; lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds; standing, walking, sitting for long periods of time, kneeling, squatting, and stooping; and traversing up and down stairs.
