Position Summary  

The Basic and Transitional Studies Program Coordinator assists High School Plus, Adult Basic Education, English Language Acquisition, i-BEST, English Language Institute, and Career Education Option students with initial point of contact through departure from the program. They provide general support for all students by assisting with intake, removing barriers, providing resources, and providing general academic support. This highly collaborative position will work closely with the Program Chairs, faculty, Program Manager, and Associate Dean.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule  

Position Salary Range: $47,100/year - $62,748/year

The salary information shown above is a general guideline only, the upper limit (step M) is a longevity step and not offered for new external hires. The salary will be determined based on candidate's qualifications and related experience, as well as market and business considerations. Individuals newly hired to Classified position are placed in a salary range based on the WPEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The employee is scheduled to work 40 hours per workweek. This is a Classified, overtime eligible position and represented by the Washington Public Employee Association of Higher Education (WPEA-HE).

About the Department  

Basic and Transitional Studies (BaTS) and the English Language Institute (ELI) are essential programs at Bellevue College that support students on their path to college and career success. These programs serve precollege learners including immigrants, refugees, international students, and U.S. residents by building foundational skills in English, math, and academic readiness.

BaTS includes Adult Basic Education (ABE), English Language Acquisition (ELA), and Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST).  Together, these programs offer specialized coursework aligned to diverse educational goals, including completion of English language pathways, earning a High School+ diploma, progression to college-level English and math, and entry into college certificate and degree programs in fields such as business, accounting, and healthcare.

The English Language Institute provides intensive English instruction for international students preparing to enter U.S. colleges and universities. Through its University Preparation track, ELI helps students develop the academic English skills necessary to thrive in higher education and beyond.

Essential Functions  

Intake Assistance

  • Welcome and assist students from all Basic and Transitional programs; providing students with information about all programs in Basic and Transitional Studies  
  • Help identify students goals and suggest appropriate programs, connecting students to Navigators, Managers, or Specialists as needed.
  • Suggest appropriate programs and assist with information on initial steps of program intake processes.
  • Access existing confidential student records and adhere to Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guidelines.  
  • Assess student needs and apply student success and advising techniques to serve students from diverse backgrounds  
  • Refer students to college services that best meet their needs, including advisors, instructors, and other college services.
  • Manage front desk inquiries 

Program Support

  • Provide and assist students with the completion of intake paperwork including the Bellevue College application, program intake and LACES forms, tuition waivers, and other related intake paperwork.

  • Provide resources related to financial support, payment, residency, or visa requirements. 

  • Assist students in program-wide orientations, proctor Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS) testing, etc. 

     

Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications  
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Any combination of relevant education and/or experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. 
  • Two (2) years of experience in adult education, secondary or higher education, social or human services, or non-profit organization.
  • One (1) year or more years of experience with educational or career advising; a strong understanding of advising strategies and theory.
  • Demonstrated experience or volunteer experience working with diverse colleagues and/or students in a collaborative and inclusive environment.
  • Demonstrated effective writing and oral communication with the ability to relate well to diverse, multicultural students, faculty, staff and the general public in a friendly, courteous and professional manner.
  • Demonstrated effective organizational, data analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated experience and intermediate skills with Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse colleagues and/or students in a collaborative and inclusive environment.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to work an alternate schedule, as needed
Preferred Qualifications  
  • One (1) year or more years of experience working in People Soft (ctcLink) or similar software.
  • One (1) year or more years of experience working with High School Completion programs.
  • Experience with adult English language learners, students from diverse backgrounds, etc.
