PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION

The Laboratory Site Supervisor is responsible for the overall daily operations of the Laboratory, ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards (CAP, CLIA, & Joint Commission) and alignment with BVHS system-wide laboratory goals and works consistently in support of the BVHS Mission, Vision, and Values.  This position oversees technical and administrative functions, including staff scheduling, quality assurance, safety, and process improvement initiatives. The Site Supervisor collaborates closely with the Administrative Laboratory Director, Laboratory Manager, and other personnel to maintain efficiency, quality, and value across all laboratory disciplines.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Duty 1: Oversees daily operations of the laboratory site, ensuring compliance with all regulatory accreditation checklists (CAP, CLIA, & Joint Commission).

  • Duty 2: Develops, implements, and maintains departmental policies and procedures in QMS.

  • Duty 3: Schedules staffing for daily coverage; manages overtime and low census adjustments. Provides coverage when necessary, including weekends.

  • Duty 4: Maintains inventory and oversees equipment and environmental maintenance logs.

  • Duty 5: Leads quality assurance and process improvement initiatives; participates in QA/PI teams and proficiency testing program.

  • Duty 6: Maintains competency in all pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical workflows and procedures ensuring complete all department mandatory learning requirements and annual competency on time.

  • Duty 7: Monitors workload trends and optimizes workflow using LEAN methods.

  • Duty 8: Communicates effectively and works collaboratively with the Laboratory Administrative Director, Manager, and all other personnel to ensure system-wide alignment.

  • Duty 9: Participates in the incident reporting and service recovery systems, leads root cause analysis investigations.

  • Duty 10: Accountable to maintain a positive professional department culture while advocating associate engagement and building positive patient experiences.

  • Duty 11: Ensures safety compliance; manages injury reporting and investigations within 24 hours.

  • Duty 12: Evaluates staff performance, administers corrective actions, and maintains accurate records.

  • Duty 13: Mentors and trains staff; develops succession planning and leadership development within the department by delegating appropriate responsibilities to associates to promote professional growth and development.

  • Duty 14: Maintains positive relationships with pathologists and other healthcare professionals.

  • Duty 15: Attends meetings and BVHS leadership development opportunities.

  • Duty 16: Maintains quality control records and ensure timely, accurate test results.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or coursework necessary to take ASCP registry (or equivalent) with one year of experience OR Associate degree of coursework necessary to take ASCP registry (or equivalent) with two years of experience.

  • Applicants must be registered as an MT, MLS, MLT, HTL, HT (ASCP) or equivalent.

  • College transcript required

  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and leadership skills.

  • Must be organized, able to prioritize, work in a fast-paced environment and have excellent problem-solving skills.

  • Must be customer focused, service oriented and be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form.

  • A valid driver's license is required (if you do not have a valid Ohio driver's license you must obtain one within 30 days of your residency in the state).  You must also meet BVHS's company fleet policy and insurance company requirements, and any other requirements that may be required to operate a vehicle.

  • Positive service-oriented interpersonal and communication skills required.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

  • Knowledge of regulatory standards (CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission).

  • Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served on his/her assigned unit/department.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous supervisor or leadership experience is preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Full range of body motion with intermittent walking, lifting (20–50 lbs), bending, and standing. Ability to operate motor vehicle for business travel. Good eye-hand coordination and fine finger dexterity.

***This position is classified “at risk” for possible occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens (HBV, HIV, etc.).  Laboratory Support Services associates not only perform phlebotomy procedures but may also handle all types of potentially infectious body fluids.
