PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION

Serves as a resource to all school personal in matters of health and health education. Serves as a consultant to the school personnel, administration, parents, and children in regards to health needs of students and make referrals when necessary.       

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Duty 1: Uses the nursing process to assess, plan and implement coordination of care, health teaching, health promotion, evaluation of care and outcomes to provide for the unique physical and emotional needs of each student. 

Duty 2: Collaborate with public health partners for screenings, referrals, follow up and communicable disease surveillance.

Duty 3: Provide Care of students and staff with acute illnesses or injuries by rendering first aid and training for staff.

Duty 4: Provide care provision or coordination, including care for chronic diseases like diabetes, asthma, epilepsy and allergies; contribute to individual assessment teams (IAT) and 504 plans and individualized education program (IEP) processes.  

Duty 5: Provide training of other school staff on appropriate health and safety procedures related to health, including emergency preparedness.

Duty 5: Act as a liaison between school and community and serve as a resource person to all school personnel in matters of health and health education.

Duty 6: Complies with organizational policies and procedures to ensure quality job performance in accordance with Bluffton Schools.

Duty 7: Maintain an interdisciplinary practice, collaborating with educators, physicians, and other health team members to increase student and family capacity for self-management and self-advocacy.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid RN license in the state of Ohio
  • Bachelor's degree in any field
  • Current School Nurse Professional Pupil Services (SNPPS) license in the state of Ohio; If not currently licensed at time of hire:
    • Must obtain temporary SNPPS license in the state of Ohio within one month of hire.
    • Must maintain temporary license while completing additional education from accredited college/university.
    • Must obtain five-year SNPPS license in the state of Ohio within two years of hire.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills essential
  • Positive service-oriented interpersonal and communication skills required.
  • Individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served on his/her assigned unit/department.
  • The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient status.
  • Must be able to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the area's policies and procedures.

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
     
  • School nurse experience

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires a full range of body motion with intermittent walking, lifting, bending, climbing, squatting, kneeling, twisting, sitting and standing. The associate will be required to walk up to one hour a day, sit for six hours a day, and stand for one hour a day. The individual must have good eye-hand coordination and fine finger dexterity. This associate must have excellent verbal communication skills to perform daily tasks. The associate must have corrected vision and hearing in the normal range.

This position is classified “at risk” for possible occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens (HBV, HIV, etc.)
