Job Description:

Performs routine duties associated with cage sanitation and preparation for reuse in a research setting including cage maintenance, monitoring equipment for proper functioning and maintaining sanitary conditions and daily records. Operates washers and ensures that cage washing and related equipment are in proper working order by cleaning, and preventive maintenance. Perform routine start-up and shut down procedures of all cage wash machines. Operates autoclave to sterilize or decontaminate caging equipment. Assist in receiving and storing materials, food and supplies. Transport caging supplies between animal rooms and cage wash rooms. Maintain sanitary conditions of cage washing rooms and other ancillary areas, such as hallways and storage areas. Take the necessary precautions, in keeping with OSHA standards and other applicable federal and state regulations, when working with hazardous chemicals, materials, animals and power equipment. Use personal protective equipment as required. Perform related responsibilities as required.

Performs duties associated with feeding, watering, cleaning and checking health status of research animals in the Center for Animal Resources and Education (CARE) at Brown University. Supply food and water to animals, stock supplies, complete daily water logs, health and enrichment forms, clean cages and the housing rooms, and perform sanitization of equipment and housing rooms. Prepare sterilized food and water bottles.
 

Job Qualifications

  • Required: High School graduate and minimum one-year experience working with animals and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community. 

  • Possess the ability to have meaningful and respectful two-way conversations. 

  • The person in this position frequently communications with faculty who inquire about their research animals. Must be able to exchange accurate information verbally and in writing. 

  • The ability to access and use email for communication and documentation. 

  • Requires attendance/completion of all mandated safety training and adherence to the animal care occupational health and wellness policy. 

  • Involves working with a wide variety of animals and learning about the housing and care needs of each species. 

  • Requires the ability to adapt to changes that occur with short notice.
