Description

Reporting to the Deputy City Treasurer and Branch Manager, Finance and Treasury, the Director is responsible for the corporate accounting and financial reporting functions, development of key financial policies and controls, and managing the City's cash handling and Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliance activities.

The Director leads a team of financial professionals in the development, implementation and management of activities that fall within the following key areas: internal management and Council financial reporting; legislative & regulatory financial reporting requirements; payroll and benefits accounting and reporting; implementation of accounting standards, financial controls and policy development; cash handling procedures and PCI compliance; and sustainment, training and optimization needs related to the City's financial system.

What will you do?

  • Continue to provide professional financial advice to senior management, the Executive Leadership Team, City Council and related Boards and Authorities
  • Develop and provide financial reports, including the City of Edmonton's Annual Reporting and annual consolidated financial statements, the Financial Report to Edmontonians, and internal financial reporting for management and City Council
  • Ensure reporting is consistent with legislative and professional requirements and that the corporate and service objectives of the organization are met in an efficient and effective manner
  • Lead the team's responsibilities to monitor and manage reporting requirements as per the Public Sector Accounting Board (PSAB), manage the benefits and pension reporting requirements, and manage internal reporting requirements as determined by the Executive Leadership Team and City Council
  • Ensure the City's activities are compliant with Payment Card Industry standards
  • Develop a team of individuals responsible for sustainment, training and optimization needs related to the City's financial system
  • Anticipate business opportunities, influence policy, planning and initiatives, and foster a culture of accountability through performance measurement
  • Integrate multi-disciplinary teams to work collaboratively with business partners supporting corporate priorities
  • Build new and innovative collaborative partnerships with external agencies such as other orders of government, community organizations, and internal departments and branches
Qualifications

  • Apply knowledge or training and/or education in Business, Finance or related disciplines
  • Chartered Professional Accountant designation (CPA) is required
  • Experience leading a comparable team(s) in a large complex organization

Assets:

  • Knowledge of the regulatory/municipal environment is considered an asset

Conditions of Employment and Work Environment:

  • 1 permanent, full-time position
  • Hours of Work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday. This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite
  • Salary: (Annually) $146,472.26 - $183,091.38
  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton. There may be a cost associated with this requirement
