Description

Are you a skilled Civil Engineering Technologist with a passion for shaping how a city grows? The City of Edmonton's Infrastructure Planning And Design team is looking for an Engineering Technologist II to join our team. 

As the Engineering Technologist in Transportation Planning and Design  team, you will support the design process from Concept to As-Built drawings delivered by the branch for arterial roadway projects ranging from roadway paving to full reconstruction.

What will you do?
  • Review project scope and objectives with the supervising Engineer and participate in field review(s) for condition assessments and utility checks

  • Provide technical design and drafting support to the Transportation Planning & Design section of the Infrastructure Planning & Design Branch

  • Prepare concept, preliminary (development), tender, and final contract plans based on current Local, Provincial, and Federal roadway design standards for various transportation infrastructure projects including: widening, rehabilitation/reconstruction, streetscape, active mode, transit improvements, and safety improvements

  • Determine survey needs, request field surveys, and interpret survey and utility information

  • Consult with other departments, consultants, Project Managers and other project stakeholders

  • Coordinate other design elements including streetlight, traffic signal, landscaping, and structural designs

  • Prepare drainage design for improvements and relocations 

  • Prepare pipeline/railway/environmental crossing plans and land plans as required for external regulatory agencies

  • Prepare access modification and land acquisition plans

  • Provide roadway design expertise and technical knowledge to other City Departments when required 

  • Review plans and deliverables  for errors and adherence to standards (both in drafting and design), and other utility conflicts and relocation requirements

  • Ensure design meets existing and future requirements of the branch Ensure designs consider construction cost, infrastructure condition, and future life-cycle considerations

  • Support technical staff by reviewing drafting work to ensure accurate preparation of concept, preliminary, tender, contract, and construction plans

  • Maintain contact with survey and construction field personnel throughout a project's construction phase and provide additional information or assist in design changes when field conflicts arise

  • Participate in public engagement events as a representative of the branch

  • Complete quantity takeoffs  to assist with setting the budget and for information to support project cost control

  • Perform calculations and designs for horizontal and vertical roadway element alignments 

  • Complete quantity takeoffs and assist with cost estimates at all stages of a project 

  • Review plan submissions (internal circulations or consultant) for conformance to approved standards and/or concepts

  • Ensure as-built information is collected and forwarded to GBIS for preparation of record plans

  • Assist other technical staff in the use of AutoCAD and Civil3D

  • Review utility circulation submissions to ensure no conflicts with and adherence to standards

  • Ensure a healthy and safe work environment, meeting OH&S standards
