Description

Are you a technical expert with a passion for keeping city infrastructure shining bright and operating safely? The Signals and Street Lighting Operations group is looking for a dedicated Engineering Technologist II to join our Technical and Regulatory Services team. In this role, you will be a vital link in managing the maintenance and evolution of the City's electrical assets, including street lighting, park and open space lighting, traffic signals, and secondary electrical systems. As an Engineering Technologist II, you will provide critical technical support and guidance for the operation and maintenance of the City's electrical infrastructure. Your day-to-day will involve collaborating with maintenance contractors, utility companies, and internal city departments to ensure repairs are executed safely, efficiently, and to high standards. You will act as a key coordinator for temporary modifications to electrical assets, managing everything from festive banner installations to complex asset relocations. Beyond maintenance, you will play a significant role in lifecycle management by performing asset condition assessments and updating the City's spatial mapping (GIS) database. Your work ensures that Edmonton's electrical systems remain reliable for years to come. Ultimately, you will be an ambassador for excellence, ensuring the safe movement of people throughout the City.

What will you do?

  • Provide technical guidance and support to ensure repairs meet City standards and timelines.
  • Coordinate repairs and infrastructure modifications with contractors, internal City partners, utility companies, community partners, and other collaborators.
  • Review and manage requests for temporary or minor modifications to electrical assets, including developing scope of work and estimates.
  • Perform field inspections to determine maintenance requirements, verify completed repairs, and assess asset conditions.
  • Assist in identifying assets for replacement and help prepare reports and strategies for efficient lifecycle management.
  • Update and maintain accurate infrastructure records and as-built information within ArcGIS Pro.
  • Research technology and products.
  • Develop and maintain processes and procedures.
  • Review, investigate and respond to internal and external inquiries.
Qualifications

  • Completion of a two (2) year diploma in an Engineering Technology program (Electrical or Civil preferred)
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in electrical asset maintenance or utility construction
  • Eligible for membership as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) with ASET

Assets:

  • Experience working with ArcGIS Pro or similar mapping and inventory management software
  • Advanced knowledge of City Design and Construction Standards (Volume 6B: Road and Walkway Lighting Construction and Materials Standards)

Skills required for success:

  • Expertise in reading and interpreting complex technical drawings, specifications, diagrams, and charts
  • Ability to manage multiple ongoing tasks ranging from short-term emergency repairs to multi-year strategic infrastructure planning
  • Proficiency in using ArcGIS Pro to capture as-built information and maintain accurate spatial mapping of electrical infrastructure
  • Ability to perform condition ratings on electrical assets and use that data to prepare strategic replacement reports
  • Skilled in determining the feasibility of modification requests and creating detailed cost estimates
  • Provide sound technical guidance on repair procedures, best practices, and specialty product applications
  • Ability to inspect and manage contractors to ensure work is completed to City standards and within defined timelines
  • Deep understanding of safety standards and the ability to act immediately in emergency scenarios to mitigate hazards
  • Capacity to enforce rules and regulations with good judgment and impartiality

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Candidates must arrange their own transportation (reimbursed per City policy) and may require business-use auto insurance
  • Successful candidates are able to be fit for a respirator; compliance with the City's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment is required
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement as per the LOU between the City of Edmonton and CSU 52
  • Weekly hours of work are currently under review and may change in accordance with the collective agreement
  • Role involves both indoor and outdoor settings with exposure to environmental conditions, noise, and electrical hazards
  • Requires physical stamina for strenuous tasks including standing, walking, kneeling, and lifting up to 20 pounds
