As an Engineering Technologist II in the Development Inspections Unit of the Subdivision and Development Coordination Section, you will monitor, inspect, and audit developer-contributed surface and electrical assets within your assigned area. Operating with high independence under the direction of a Senior Engineer, you will serve as the authoritative field contact, resolving immediate technical issues and ensuring all civil construction strictly satisfies municipal requirements to protect long-term public interest.

In this role, you will ensure compliance with key business deliverables outlined in Servicing Agreements with private developers. In alignment with the City Plan, you will collaborate with a team responsible for accepting developer-contributed transportation infrastructure, while also supporting updates to the City of Edmonton's Design and Construction standards.

What will you do?

  • Evaluate, verify, and approve or reject applications for Construction Completion Certificates (CCC) and Final Acceptance Certificates (FAC) for paved roads, alleys, sidewalks, street lighting, and fencing
  • Manage quality control for a broad range of development activities, including new industrial, commercial, and residential subdivisions, utility cut restorations, and municipal improvements
  • Supervise daily workflows, allocate tasks, and provide technical mentorship for junior technical staff and students
  • Know how to understand detailed engineering drawings submitted by external consultants to identify potential field conflicts and provide formal construction comments to design teams
  • Independently establish the scope and financial value of required construction defect assessments and authorize formal invoicing
  • Leverage practical field experience to provide strategic input and recommendations for ongoing revisions to City Design and Construction Specifications
Qualifications

  • Completion of a two-year diploma in an appropriate Engineering Technology program
  • Eligible for recognition as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) with ASET
  • Minimum of 5 years of practical experience in roadway and municipal infrastructure construction
  • Hands-on experience inspecting civil construction projects (roads, utilities, concrete work) and applying project management principles regarding inspection schedules and project closeouts (CCC/FAC processes)

Assets:

  • Active participation on interview or selection panels for technical recruitment
  • Experience updating foundational engineering guidelines or operational instruction documents

Skills Required for Success:

  • Proficiency in reading, interpreting, and modifying complex engineering drawings on-site to match field realities
  • Advanced negotiation and dispute resolution tactics to navigate firm, professional field interactions with contractors and developers
  • Strategic independent judgment to prioritize high-risk inspection schedules and milestones across concurrent projects
  • Clear written and verbal communication styles necessary to serve as an effective technical liaison with external developers, consultants, and internal departments
  • Analytical skills to audit materials testing and Quality Assurance documentation for structural compliance
  • Resource allocation, project distribution, and operational leadership capabilities to coordinate junior team members
  • Innovative problem-solving to redesign components on the fly when unexpected site conditions arise
