The Edmonton Public Library (EPL) is looking for two highly motivated librarians to join our team as our 2026/2027 Intern Librarians. This Internship opportunity is a chance to show that you have the right stuff to contribute to a dynamic organization. We are looking for librarians who are passionate about reducing barriers to accessing library services and identifying innovative ways to meet community needs.
1. Library Services Access Intern Librarian
Working under the leadership of the Executive Director, Customer Experience, the Library Services Access Intern Librarian will conduct a qualitative and quantitative research project to reimagine access to library services and promote connection across Edmonton communities. They will identify and analyze data and trends to create actionable recommendations aimed at reducing barriers to customer access. This role will directly advance EPL's strategic priorities which aim to expand reach of EPL services across the geographic span of the City of Edmonton.
2. Reading Services Intern Librarian
The Reading Services Intern Librarian will support EPL's vision of increasing reading engagement, strengthening readers' advisory, literacy, and reading across a wide variety of formats and classifications, including but not limited to print books, ebooks, audiobooks, magazines, graphic novels, fiction, and nonfiction. Working under the Executive Director, Customer Experience, the intern will apply research, community engagement, and data analysis to explore programming supports and recommend development of emotionally resonant, accessible, and inspiring reading experiences for all Edmontonians. This work will support EPL's strategic direction of fostering curiosity, connection, and diverse perspectives for Edmontonians, and make EPL the best place to Read.
In both of these positions, the successful applicants will:
- Explore research, trends and new developments in community-led initiatives in public libraries across the world;
- Review and analyze previous research conducted by EPL related to these topics to inform project direction and goals;
- Engage in research, collect data and evaluate findings;
- Develop recommendations and implementation strategies for service improvements;
- Prepare reports on your findings and recommendations, and present them to EPL staff; and
- Engage EPL staff in collaborative dialogue.
You must have successfully completed a Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) program by May 1, 2026 (with transcripts showing completion) and have graduated within the last two years. Candidates with older MLIS graduation dates will not be considered.
Essential skills needed for this position include:
Experience in research methods and design of research projects;
Strong communication skills, including the ability to write in-depth research papers/reports;
Ability to define and manage a multi-faceted complex project while meeting timelines and quality standards;
High level of initiative and independence;
Demonstrated passion for and experience in service to library customers;
Excellent interpersonal skills;
Strong customer service orientation;
Strong skills and demonstrated aptitude in desktop computing, use of web tools, and library technologies;
Ability to collaborate effectively and to contribute as a member of the Library Services Team;
Imagination, creativity, and risk taking are key skills;
Professional commitment to the Canadian Federation of Library Associations position statements on Intellectual Freedom and on Diversity and Inclusion is essential.
Note:
- These positions work out of the Stanley A. Milner Library and are not eligible for remote work.
- You must have the ability to travel within the City of Edmonton. A Class 5 Driver's License and access to a vehicle is preferred.
Pay Band:
$43.41 per hour
Shift differential may apply in accordance with the terms and conditions of the CSU 52 Collective Agreement.
