Description

The City Plan, Edmonton's Municipal Development Plan, affirms that Edmonton “protects and enhances its image and identity through heritage.” The City has a nationally-recognized heritage program which seeks to identify and manage Edmonton's historic resources in order to enhance the quality and meaning of the city and its landscapes for present and future generations. To date, the program has facilitated the protection of almost 200 designated Municipal Historic Resources.

A new Heritage Places Strategy is also nearing completion. The strategy, which will replace Edmonton's current Historic Resource Management Plan (2009), will build on the City's existing heritage program to include new histories, voices, peoples and climate resilience objectives.

Now the heritage team is seeking a motivated and focused intern to play a direct role in supporting place-based heritage in Edmonton and assisting with projects such as a modern heritage inventory. You will work with the City of Edmonton's Urban Planning and Economy Department within the Planning and Environment Services Branch to gain valuable professional experience as a heritage planner.

What will you do?

Facilitate the fulfillment of statutory requirements related to Municipal Historic Resource designation, including:

  • Engaging with heritage property owners.
  • Assisting with the development of scope of rehabilitation and conservation work.
  • Assisting with evaluation of construction quotes to identify grant funding consistent with City policy.
  • Assisting with the preparation of Notices of Intention to Designate, designation bylaws, and Council reports and associated recommendations.

Facilitate the identification of new historic resources and associated amendments to the Inventory of Historic Resources in Edmonton, including:

  • Researching and preparing Statements of Significance.
  • Updating the Inventory in accordance with resource evaluations.
  • Updating City of Edmonton internal database (POSSE).

Support early implementation of activities in the Heritage Places Strategy:

  • Conduct research and exploration to support priority activities in the Strategy.
  • Assist with development of internal processes informing management of City-owned heritage.
  • Assisting with the development of project terms of reference and communications and public engagement plans.
  • Assisting with ongoing communication and updates to relevant groups, other City business areas, and the public.

Conduct research to inform the City's approach to place-based heritage management, including:

  • Assisting with the development of projections and identification of trends in order to proactively respond to emerging issues.
  • Researching and reviewing best practices from other jurisdictions in order to evaluate their applicability in the context of Edmonton.
  • Assist with the review of development permits, rezoning, and subdivision applications for heritage resources.
  • Help improve the effectiveness of Edmonton's heritage management efforts.
Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a degree from a recognized Urban Planning, Architecture or Heritage Planning program within the past 24 months

Assets:

  • Familiarity with the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada
  • Previous coursework or volunteer experience related to architectural history or cultural landscapes

Skills required for success:

  • Proficient reading comprehension and professional writing
  • Thorough research techniques for historical and planning data
  • Understanding of zoning frameworks and municipal bylaws
  • Ability to synthesize complex information into clear, concise communications
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
  • Ability to navigate guiding documents, regulations, and the Historical Resources Act
  • Collaborative mindset for working effectively within a small, dynamic team
  • Professional composure when engaging with community partners
  • Adaptability to a busy work environment with evolving daily tasks

Conditions of Employment:

This recent graduate internship position will be partially funded through a grant from Young Canada Works. Successful candidates must meet all program eligibility criteria including, but not limited to:

  • Between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
  • Recent graduate who has graduated from college or university within the last 24 months at the start of employment
  • A Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement as per the LOU between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
  • This role works in both indoor and outdoor settings
