As a leader in our branch, your role will be to inspire and cultivate our vision and cultural commitments while championing continuous improvement in your area of responsibility.

As a Licensed Crew Leader, you will oversee the logistics of specific tasks regarding maintenance of the City's urban forest including but not limited to log pickup, stump grinding, the wood reclamation program, and winter snow clearing for the Forestry Yard.

What will you do?

  • Instruct, lead, participate, and facilitate the work of staff (Equipment Operators and Labourers) performing Urban Forestry related tasks
  • Coordinate Crane Trucks (five-ton and two-ton) to pick up logs and stems from removal trees
  • Coordinate stump grinding crews and ensure Ground Disturbance procedures are strictly followed
  • Plan and direct crews for special event deliveries of short-term use items such as picnic tables, garbage cans, and BBQs
  • Track all work including labour, equipment, and materials using work orders and digital systems
  • Supervise the wood reclamation program, including the milling and kiln drying of material
  • Coordinate snow removal around the forestry yard and work sites
  • Supervise the Forestry Yard Worker and ensure timely coordination of yard work, including safety inspections
  • Inspect and approve work completed by crews to ensure high-quality standards
  • Train and educate crew members in specialized forestry operations tasks
  • Make day-to-day decisions regarding work crews, including monitoring attendance and performance management
  • Review and update Hazard Assessments and SOPs annually; deliver training on these documents to all crew members
  • Ensure that all work is performed in a safe manner in compliance with OH&S standards
  • Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications

  • Completion of a two (2) year post-secondary diploma in Forestry or a related field
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in Urban Forestry Operations, including at least two (2) years of supervisory experience
  • International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Arborist Certification is a requirement
  • Ability to complete Ground Disturbance 2 training for supervisors within 90 days of hire

Assets:

  • Chainsaw training and competency
  • Rigging and stump grinding experience
  • Forklift certification
  • Leadership training

Skills required for success:

  • Extensive knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in wood milling, kiln operation, and arboricultural support
  • Knowledge of Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) and truck routes
  • Experience in equipment operation and load securement
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills with the ability to lead and motivate a team
  • Ability to solve problems and make independent decisions regarding material viability and site safety
  • Ensure safety and integrity of reclaimed products in alignment with Enviso standards
  • Proven time management, organizational, and leadership skills
  • Computer proficiency in Google Suite, SAP, and GIS/Davey Tree Keeper
  • Conduct work in compliance with the City's Environmental Management System (EMS)

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 3 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is required
  • Successful candidates must be fit for a respirator; compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment is required
  • Compliance with safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including steel-toe boots and coveralls
  • Possession of current Emergency First Aid, CPR-C, and AED certifications
  • Applicants may be tested

  • This role operates in both an office setting and a field environment
  • The role involves working outdoors in various weather conditions, terrains, and extreme temperatures
  • Exposure to environmental conditions, including dust, noise, vibrations, and mechanical hazards
