Join the Urban Planning and Economy Department as a Planner 1, where you'll play a vital role in shaping the future of Edmonton's built environment. Our Department is the Development Authority for the City of Edmonton and is responsible for all land use duties and decision making for the public good as legislated by the Municipal Government Act. This position offers an exciting opportunity to apply your planning expertise, problem-solving skills, and professional judgment.

The Planner 1 is instrumental in reviewing,  managing and providing recommendations to City Council on applications for rezoning properties, zoning bylaw text amendments, statutory plan amendments and road closures. This role involves interpreting complex legislation and policies, negotiating with applicants, and ensuring fair and transparent public engagement. You will be responsible for preparing high-quality reports and bylaw packages for City Council, requiring strong communication and organizational skills. The Planner 1 also acts as a crucial resource, providing interpretive and educational services on planning and land use matters to the public, development industry, and other city administration members. This position demands critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to navigate sensitive land use issues.

What will you do?

  • Process applications for rezoning land, legally closing roadways, and amending statutory and non-statutory plans, applying planning expertise, creativity, and problem-solving skills to analyze and resolve land use issues
  • Interpret relevant legislation, municipal policies, procedures, guidelines, and best practices to ensure compliance and inform decision-making
  • Consult with technical stakeholders to gather and assemble necessary information and data for applications
  • Negotiate with applicants to revise and shape development proposals to align with relevant plans, bylaws, and regulations
  • Ensure transparent communication, consultation, and engagement with the public and external stakeholders throughout the application process
  • Write accurate, informative, and succinct technical reports and prepare coordinated bylaw packages for presentation and consideration by City Council
  • Manage timelines effectively to deliver reports to City Council within departmental expectations
  • Provide interpretive and educational services regarding planning and land use legislation and processes to the public and other members of civic administration
  • Act as a public resource for specific geographical areas of the city, responding to inquiries with timely and appropriate information
  • Perform research, analysis, and investigations on various land use matters as needed by file and project demands, or as directed by the supervisor
