Join our Development Services team as a Planner I and play a vital role in shaping the physical landscape of Edmonton. We are looking for collaborative professionals dedicated to high-quality urban planning and meaningful public engagement.
This role focuses on reviewing, processing, and managing amendments to the City's Zoning Bylaw. You will lead the planning process by providing professional judgment and interpreting policies to ensure changes align with the City's strategic goals. Additionally, you will design and deliver engagement activities to inform and support these bylaw changes with various community partners.
What will you do?
- Lead the planning process for specific Zoning Bylaw amendments using established project management protocols
- Review, prepare, and process applications by applying specialized knowledge of land use regulations and guidelines
- Formulate administrative recommendations and prepare comprehensive reports and presentations for City Council
- Interpret and explain legislation, municipal policies, and best planning practices to various interested and/or affected parties
- Design and facilitate public engagement activities to ensure input from collaborators and engagement participants informs bylaw direction
- Provide clear direction to Planning Technicians for the creation of engagement materials and development modeling
- Respond to inquiries from the public and City Council regarding zoning issues
- Collaborate with other Planners to resolve complex planning issues and advance assigned files
- Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning or a related discipline
- Two years of progressively responsible experience in urban planning or municipal planning settings
Assets:
- Master's degree in Urban Planning or a related discipline
- Experience in development approvals and public engagement
- Eligibility for membership in the Alberta Professional Planners Institute (APPI)
Skills required for Success:
- Proficiency in managing complex and sensitive applications that set new standards in municipal planning
- Expertise in land use planning principles, practices, and land development
- Mastery of land use regulations, zoning bylaws, and the Municipal Government Act
- Aptitude for identifying complex issues and framing effective methods and solutions
- Capacity to establish and maintain effective working relationships and resolve conflict
- Strong organizational and project management skills to meet demanding timelines
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, specifically in drafting legal bylaw text
- Self-direction and the confidence to take positions with minimal supervision

Work Environment:
- Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
- The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance
- This role works primarily in an indoor setting
- Availability to attend events during the evenings and weekends may be required from time to time
- This is a public-facing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs, expectations and emotional states.
