Working as a communications professional for the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is complex and challenging. For the right candidate, it is also rewarding. This is a role where you will advise and engage with EPS senior management, so you excel at translating organizational vision into action. Your work will have a direct impact on the way Edmontonians view the EPS and its critical role within the community. Reporting to the Director of Media Relations and Public Affairs, the Supervisor's major responsibilities include:

  • Provide sound advice, direction, and support to senior management and other supervisory staff in the areas of public and media relations, issues management, crisis communications, and internal communications.
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and measuring communication strategies that align EPS' strategic goals and addresses the short-term and long-term needs of the Service.
  • Manage the flow of information to the public, media, and other stakeholders, ensuring accuracy, timeliness and adherence to internal policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate and facilitate media training for organizational spokespeople, senior management, and other staff to ensure they are equipped for interacting with the media.
  • Coordinate media events such as press conference, media availabilities, and interviews.
  • Maintain and develop key relationships with internal and external stakeholders, such as the Edmonton police Commission and the City of Edmonton.
  • Proactively identify and monitor issues that may impact the Service, developing related strategies.
  • Draft a variety of documents and messaging, including but not limited to responses to media inquiries, news releases, statements, speaking notes, backgrounders, FAQs, briefing notes/packages, ad copy, etc.
  • Collaborate with other unit areas in the Corporate Communications Division to ensure an integrated approach to organizational communication activities.
  • Act as an organizational spokesperson as required.
  • Participate in the Media Relations Unit standby rotation, which includes work on evenings and weekends
  • Provide supervision, mentorship, and leadership to a team of four (4) full-time staff, with specific staffing assignments to be determined between the Director and the successful candidate.
