The Youth Services Section of the Edmonton Police Service requires a Youth Justice Coordinator whose primary focus will be to identify opportunities for justice involved youth to connect with professional/community supports and programming that promotes accountability for their actions, which in turn will lessen the chances of re-offending. This position will work closely alongside the many facets of Alberta Justice, including at the time of charge, upon release, and during community supervision to ensure the recommended release plans, programming and supports are meeting the needs of the youth and the community. Additionally, this position will work to address and bring accountability to system level support and referral challenges by developing and fostering professional working relationships. The Youth Justice Coordinator will also provide supervision to the Youth Referral Coordinator position, who's role is to provide system navigation and referral pathways for high risk and at-risk youth.
This position will be responsible for developing and maintaining strong collaborative partnerships externally and across all areas of the organization. Key responsibilities will include:
- Recommend, advocate and monitor support for complex, justice involved youth.
- Attend youth justice court to advocate and provide appropriate contextual information on behalf of the youth and/or involved service team.
- Ensure adequate professional and community resources are in place for complex, justice involved youth; including custody release plans.
- Advocate for and support the coordination of PSECA, PCHAD and secure orders as required and ensure appropriate release plans are in place.
- Work to address system gaps that leave youth unsupported or place the community at risk.
- Act as a police liaison with justice partners to help bridge the custody to community transition.
- At a systems level, work with professional, justice and community agencies to address system challenges that leave justice involved youth unsupported.
- Participate and/or lead complex case reviews that require a systems level approach.
- Promote healthy external partnerships with both professional and community-based referral agencies serving justice involved youth.
- Sustain both informal and formal arrangements with a wide variety of youth serving agencies.
- Coordinate interdisciplinary training opportunities to enhance knowledge, trust and resiliency.
- Increase awareness of resources available to at-risk, justice involved youth populations.
- Participate in capacity building community and professional presentations as requested by leadership.
- Support the Youth Referral Coordinators role by providing guidance and/or taking on complex coordination files that require a systems level approach.
- Initiate and participate in Youth Support Circles as required alongside diverse community partners to create customized intervention and support plans.
- Report on positive outcomes and learnings weekly, quarterly and annually (both internally and externally as required).
