Reporting to the Supervisor of Play Space and Amenity Services, you will oversee the maintenance programs for play space assets across a quadrant of the city. This is a hands-on leadership role where you will manage diverse crews performing Play space repairs and inspections, Parks site servicing and routed garbage collection, and seasonal tasks like outdoor washroom maintenance. You will act as a key technical resource, ensuring all work meets rigorous CSA safety standards and harmonized operational goals. Your oversight is critical in providing safe environments and mitigating risks for the public. By collaborating with various internal teams and community partners, you will help shape the future of our parks and play areas. What will you do?

  • Utilize your Canadian Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) expertise to inspect parkland amenities and ensure they meet CSA Z614 standards
  • Recruit, orient, and supervise a team of up to 40 staff, providing coaching, performance management, and safety training
  • Coordinate annual maintenance schedules for play spaces, site servicing, and garbage removal to ensure a clean and safe environment
  • Track budgets, prepare work estimates, and manage requisitions for materials and equipment needed for site maintenance
  • Review and approve play space plans with architects and project managers, and respond to inquiries from community partners and interest groups
  • Identify process bottlenecks and research new materials or best practices to enhance service delivery and asset longevity
Qualifications

  • Completion of a University Bachelor degree in Engineering, Science, Arts, Education, Business or other related field
  • Three (3) years of work experience within parks play space operations
  • Two (2) years in a supervisory or leadership capacity
  • Must possess and maintain Certified Canadian Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) designation

Skills required for success:

  • Act as a brand ambassador for the City while in the field, interacting positively with families and park users
  • Ability to ensure all parkland amenities align with City of Edmonton Design and Construction Standards and CSA Z614 requirements
  • Champion environmental stewardship by researching and implementing sustainable maintenance materials
  • Participate in the 'Winter Emergency Response' or seasonal shift changes to support city-wide operations
  • Mentor the next generation of park professionals by fostering an inclusive and safe crew culture
  • Experience working in a unionized environment and managing large seasonal operations
  • Ability to provide direction and leadership to implement annual work plans while setting daily priorities and work performance expectations
  • Skilled in building effective teams through coaching, mentoring, and managing attendance and performance for large crews
  • Experience leading and managing construction projects and procurement of construction materials
  • Proficiency in reviewing financial reports, preparing work estimates, and providing input into budget variance reporting processes
  • Experience in conducting incident investigations, processing safety documentation (WCB, near miss forms), and providing safety instructions to staff
  • Strong interpersonal skills to investigate concerns from 311 or supervisors and collaborate with landscape architects and project managers
  • Proficiency with Google Suite (Docs, Sheets), SAP, and GIS applications

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator; compliance with the City's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment is required
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Possession of Standard First Aid, CPR-C and AED certifications
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • This role works in both indoor and outdoor settings
  • Exposure to environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, inclement weather, dust, noise, light variation, vibrations, chemicals, and animals
  • Requires completion of repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing, walking, kneeling, bending, stooping, and lifting items up to 20 pounds
