POSITION SUMMARY

The RN in the Pain Clinic is a Registered Nurse (RN) who assists in the care continuum of pain patients, ensuring exceptional clinical-communication between the Clinic, Surgery and Nursing areas. Primary responsibilities include ensuring essential equipment, supplies and medications are required for pain cases have been ordered, anticipating the unique needs of surgical patients. Works collaboratively to effectively communicate these needs, with appropriate departments, essential personnel both in and outside the organization as necessary. Participates as part of the inter-operative surgical team as deemed necessary, taking direction from the Pain Specialist; while working collaboratively with the Peri-Operative RN. Acts as a liaison between the Pain Clinic, Surgery and Nursing Services ensuring productive lines of communication in the development and updating of case cards and preference cards, etc. as requested.
The RN in the Pain Clinic shall be considered part of the clinic nursing team assisting in the rooming of clinic patients, assessing and managing needs and symptoms and effective EMR documentation and providing patient education in support to patients and their families as a means of continuity of care for all pain patients.
The RN will support both the clinic and surgery department schedules and needs on this campus.
- Education and Experience:
- Bachelor of science/art in nursing preferred. Two years clinical experience in pain care preferred.
- License/Certificates:
- Current Minnesota RN license. American Heart Association BLS certification required within 30 days of hire. American Heart Association ACLS certification required within 4 months of hire. Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) preferred.

- Prepare for OR cases, providing RN scrub support to the Pain Surgeon anticipating the inter-operative needs of the patient, in accordance with AORN, AST and departmental policies and procedures.
- Scheduling of requests for inter-operative vendor support for surgical cases, collaboratively communicating with the surgical department(s) all arrangements.
- Identify and communicate in advance all special equipment and supply need(s) for pain injections/surgical cases, allowing adequate time for department procurement.
- Assist physician and staff to maintain an accurate daily schedule and efficient patient flow.
- Facilitate communication between the patient and physician.
- Provide patient education and instructions regarding prescribed therapies and preparation of ordered procedures to include anticipating needs post operatively.
- Remain up-to-date on new nursing skills and technology, utilizing the nursing process (observation, assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation) in the delivery of care.
- Perform duties in accordance with physician's orders, the Medical Center's policies, methods, and techniques, and in coordinating with other departments and Medical Center personnel.
- Demonstrate Standards of Excellence when other duties are assigned.
