Summary This position is located within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), VA Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Hampton VA Medical Center (HVAMC), Langley AFB CBOC. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible and accountable for the provision of patient care and for delivery of quality nursing care to a culturally diverse veteran patient population (internal/external). Responsibilities VA Careers - Licensed Practical Nurse: Licensed Practical Nurse - Major duties include but are not limited to: Reports to the designated Nurse Manager and is responsible and accountable for the provision of patient care and for delivery of quality nursing care to a culturally diverse veteran patient population (internal/external). Demonstrates working practices that include adherence to infection control standards and the safe use and operation of equipment. Seeks guidance from RN and/or provider regarding resolution of clinical issues. May be assigned other duties deem necessary to support organizational goals. Initiates, performs, and completes assigned duties in providing care to variable patient populations with technical proficiency. Observes, identifies, and responds to the patient's needs for acre including medication equipment-assisted care and patient/family education. Recognizes and considers emotional, cultural, spiritual, socio-economic, and age related factors. Assists during emergency situations, initiates, and/or assists with CPR, choking, fire emergencies, psychiatric emergencies, etc. and obtains equipment and supplies as requested by the RN or physician. Prepares and administers prescribed medications (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular and/or intravenous) and performs treatment according to established policies and procedures. Observes for physical and/or emotional changes in patient's condition from prescribed medications/treatments, promptly and accurately documenting noted changes, and reporting any deviations from normal to RN or MD. Initiates, administers, assesses, monitors and reports IV sites, start intravenous fluids and piggyback solutions prepared by Pharmacy. Performs duties for complex diagnostic tests and/or specialized practices or procedures, which include prescribing patients, assisting in the diagnostic examination, preparing, and handling specialized instruments or other specialized equipment, and monitors patient's conditions before, during, and following the procedure. Documents vital signs, treatments and procedures performed in Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS). Retrieves data via computer, completes competency for assigned role, completes unit level activities and unit in-services according to Nursing Service policy/procedures. Possesses the skill to provide care to the young adult, adult, and geriatric patients, i. e. ages 18 years through 100+ years old with knowledge of the principles of growth and development over this life span. Qualifications Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing [Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)] at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Licensure: Full, active, current and unrestricted licensure as a Licensed Practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or District of Columbia. English Language Proficiency: Licensed practical or vocational nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in both spoken and written English as required by 38 U. S. C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
