Now Hiring: Shop Manager
Location: CREC Hartford, CT
Wage Range: $85,000 – $95,000/year (commensurate with experience)

At First Student, our Shop Managers are essential to keeping school transportation running safely and efficiently. As the Shop Manager supporting CREC Schools, you'll lead all maintenance operations at our Hartford location, supervise a dedicated team of shop staff, and work closely with both maintenance and operations teams to ensure our fleet is always ready to serve students and the community.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Overseeing and scheduling all fleet maintenance activities for CREC Schools and troubleshooting equipment issues as they arise

  • Supervising shop staff, including hiring, training, performance management, and supporting employee development

  • Communicating with dispatch, operations, and location management regarding vehicle availability and maintenance status

  • Monitoring maintenance budgets, reviewing repair orders, and ensuring cost-effective, high-quality work

  • Enforcing compliance with State, Federal, and company policies to maintain a safe and efficient work environment

  • Ordering parts, fuel, and coordinating with vendors as needed

  • Leading projects to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs

  • Ensuring technicians are trained on the latest procedures and safety standards

  • Completing special projects and performing hands-on mechanical work as needed

What We're Looking For:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training preferred

  • Valid CDL operator's license with required endorsements (or ability to obtain)

  • 5+ years of hands-on mechanical supervisory experience, preferably with diesel engines and school bus equipment

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Proficiency with computers and maintenance management systems

  • Ability to work in physically demanding shop environments (may require lifting 20–50 lbs, crouching, or working beneath vehicles)
