Job Summary:
Performs variety of technical, patient-attending, and clerical duties pertaining to echocardiography with technical direction from cardiologist.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Prepares patient and equipment according to physicians orders. Obtains, measures, calculates, and records echocardiogram study.
- Reviews patient medical history, clinical findings, and indications for testing. Positions patient in manner conducive to achieving optimum diagnostic results. Surveys area being studied. Obtains preliminary sonographic information with respect to acoustical properties of patient and anatomical/pathological relationships.
- Selects appropriate transducer angulation and gain setting to best demonstrate anatomy and/or pathology under examination. Operates equipment in M-mode, 2D, spectral Doppler and color Doppler techniques.
- Searches for cardiac pathology. Moves transducer over heart at varying angles to record chamber dimensions, cardiac wall thickness and motion, ejection fractions and ratios. Visualizes various anatomical areas of heart by way of real time imaging. Evaluates direction and speed of intracardiac blood flow using Doppler. Assesses cardiac valves for pathology.
- Creates permanent record of significant functional and/or anatomical and pathological data obtained.
- Reviews, screens, and measures echocardiography data. Notifies cardiologist of critical abnormalities when apparent. Compiles, records, and collates data for cardiologist interpretation and signature.
- Performs echocardiography studies on outpatients and inpatients according to level of expertise/experience of sonographer.
- Maintains cardio-pulmonary resuscitation certification. Functions effectively as performer, recorder, or circulator in Code 500 situations.
- Examines and cleans and maintains ultrasound equipment regularly. Ensures proper operation. Refers significant problems to Biomedical department. Notifies supervisor of equipment malfunction.
- Ensures adequate stock of supplies. Replenishes supplies as needed.
- Schedules patients for examinations. Logs tests performed in echo lab. Codes for proper fee collection. Performs other clerical tasks as assigned.
- Orients and trains new hires in performance of various echocardiography tests.
- Gathers, collates, and/or analyzes echocardiology data.
Basic Qualifications: Experience
- Minimum one (1) year experience in adult or pediatric echocardiography, including experience or successful completion of training program (pre-hire, post-hire, or on-the-job) in area of specialty, if applicable.
- Successful completion of accredited (CAAHEP/CMA approved or equivalent) ultrasound/vascular technology education program specializing in echocardiography.
- Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer Certificate OR Registered Cardiac Sonographer Certificate
- CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers OR Basic Life Support
- Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in decision making, customer service, oral communication, problem solving, results orientation, systems thinking, and teamwork PC applications.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in database PC applications.
- Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) in Pediatric Echocardiography by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).
