Job Summary
Responsible for leading the strategic development and management of Kamehameha Schools' comprehensive performing arts program that encompasses a diverse array of arts disciplines, including music, drama, dance, and interdisciplinary arts. Designs and implements curriculum, coordinates performances, and oversees extracurricular activities that foster creativity and artistic expression among our haumāna. Organizes performing arts events, as well as various significant school-wide special events.
Essential Responsibilities
Program Development and Management
Develops and implements a diverse performing arts curriculum across all grade levels, integrating music, drama, dance, and interdisciplinary arts.
Designs age-appropriate lesson plans and performance schedules that accommodate different skill levels and interests.
Ensures the curriculum aligns with state and national standards to support students' artistic and academic growth.
Promotes student involvement in performing arts through recruitment, auditions, and targeted outreach, while facilitating leadership opportunities within the program.
Provides individualized support and mentorship to students pursuing advanced study or careers in the performing arts.
Continuously assesses and keeps informed of current trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in performing arts education and administration.
Attends relevant conferences and workshops to enhance professional skills and knowledge.
Leadership and Community Collaboration
Leads, mentors, and supports performing arts faculty through recruitment, training, and professional development.
Conducts performance evaluations and provides constructive feedback to enhance instructional quality and program effectiveness.
Fosters a collaborative environment that encourages innovation and professional growth among staff and faculty.
Builds and maintains strong relationships with parents, alumni, community organizations, and local arts entities to enhance the performing arts program, as well as being a public representative advocating for the value and impact of the arts in education.
Promotes the performing arts program through various communication channels, including social media, newsletters, and school publications.
Production and Special Events Oversight
Organizes and oversees significant school-wide and high school-specific performing arts events, including, but not limited to Founder's Day and Graduation.
Manages all aspects of performance production, covering stage design, lighting, sound, costuming, and technical support.
Coordinates and collaborates with other departments, students, faculty, external stakeholders, and partners to ensure seamless integration of performing arts into broader school activities.
Oversees event logistics, including venue selection, scheduling, and volunteer coordination, while collaborating with students and faculty to create engaging, high-quality events.
Budget and Resource Management
Develops and manages the performing arts budget while overseeing the procurement, maintenance, and inventory of equipment and supplies to ensure efficient resource allocation and staffing.
Identifies and pursues external funding opportunities including grants, sponsorships, and donations to support and expand the program.
Position Requirements
Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.
Bachelor's degree in Performing Arts, Arts Education, Music Education, Theater, Dance, or related field.
Minimum 5 years of experience in performing arts education, or related field.
Minimum 2 years of management, supervisor, or lead experience.
Demonstrated experience in directing and producing performances and managing large-scale events.
Exceptional leadership and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of engaging with students, parents, faculty, and community members.
Proficient in all aspects of performing arts production, including artistic, technical, and administrative components.
Facilitative leadership skills, including team building, conflict resolution skills and the ability to inspire and motivate students and staff, fostering an inclusive artistic environment.
Knowledge of budgeting process; budget analysis and monitoring.
Preferred Qualifications
Masterʻs degree in Performing Arts, Arts Education, Music Education, Theater, Dance, or related field.
Experience in senior creative leadership roles, particularly within educational or cultural organizations.
Experience working in a K-12 educational environment, particularly in a leadership capacity.
Valid Driverʻs License.
Physical Requirements
Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
Frequently stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 50 pounds (e.g. lifting equipment).
Must be able to twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach, or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.
Working Conditions
Work is conducted in classrooms, theaters, and performance venues/settings.
Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours, but evening and weekend hours are often required for performances, special events, and community engagements, requiring flexibility to meet goals and objectives.
