Job Summary

Responsible for the overall reconciliation, analysis, and control of the Organization's general ledger and the recordation of the subsidiaries financial information. Maintains the reporting systems necessary to prepare the GAAP financial statements, Trust Spending, and other reporting requirements. Responsible for understanding various financial systems and ability to leverage technology for data analysis. Responsible for identifying, researching and solving systemic processing, data and internal control issues. Acts as the organization‘s primary liaison with inquiries by the external auditors during their examination period.


Essential Responsibilities

GL Operations

  • Responsible for ensuring the organization's general ledger and systems necessary for reporting requirements set forth by management or regulatory bodies are accurate, complete, and timely. Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) financial statements and Trust Spending.
  • Manages the maintenance of the Fixed Asset subledger.
  • Preparation and/or review of periodic tax filings including General Excise Tax and Form 990 workbook.
  • Manages and coordinates all monthly general ledger closings and responsible for all year-end closing procedures. Controls, analyzes, and approves all journal entries, adjustments, and general ledger reconciliations for the general ledger system. Manages the reconciliations and checklists.
  • Conducts analytical reviews of the general ledger to ensure proper recordation of transactions. Maintains chart of accounts, including the analysis of all proposed changes and additions.
  • Coordinates and prepares annual audit schedules required by the external auditors. Acts as the organization‘s liaison with inquiries by the external auditors during their examination period. Prepares external financial reports to financial institutions and rating agencies and other special ad hoc reports for internal and/or external use, as requested.


Supervision

  • Supervises the general ledger staff and manages the general ledger department to ensure operations are maintained on an on-going basis with efficiency, integrity, and accuracy.
  • Demonstrates leadership by taking lead roles with Division projects, including delegation of tasks to staff and completion within specified time period.


Technology & Analysis

  • Responsible for understanding various financial systems and underlying data structure, data tables, and source systems.
  • Ability to leverage technology to efficiently, effectively, and accurately obtain and analyze data.
  • Perform analysis utilizing complex and large data sets to identify trends, business practices, and support organization initiatives.
  • Responsible for identifying, researching, and solving systemic processing, data, and internal control issues which may require collaboration with business units to understand business needs and current processes, presenting and evaluating options, and executing business process change.


Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.

  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related work experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience.
  • Working knowledge and thorough understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Highly proficient in MS Office applications including Excel, Word, Access, and Powerpoint. Experience working with data mining & reporting tools in an automated financial accounting system.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of broad-based financial functions and systems. Ability to analyze, reconcile, and synthesize information from various databases/financial statements and prepare reports and analysis. Strong understanding of process flows and internal controls. Ability to analyze and resolve difficult accounting issues.
  • Excellent organizational skills to work independently and prioritize and handle complex, multiple, simultaneous projects. Demonstrated ability to multi-task and remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt in a fast changing environment while meeting critical deadlines.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with internal/external staff at all levels.
  • Supervisory experience in delegating, guiding, directing, counselling, and evaluating staff. Strong managerial skills with ability to work in a team environment and to supervise staff and teams to accomplish common objectives.
  • Ability to initiate business process improvement efforts, change management processes, and implementation of these solutions.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Public Accountant designation.
  • Prior experience in educational institution or not-for-profit organization.
  • Prior accounting system experience with Oracle Fusion Cloud, MRI, and Business Intelligence software.


Physical Requirements

  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
  • Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.


Working Conditions

  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.
  • Work is conducted in an office/school environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours but evening and weekend hours are often required to meet goals and objectives.
