Sr. Scientist – Product
Kelly® Science & Clinical is seeking a Scientist/Senior Scientist – Product Development for a direct-hire position at a cutting-edge client in San Diego, CA. Salary: $120,000–$160,000/year, commensurate with level and experience

This client is an industry-leading company that's leading the way in developing breakthrough neuroprotective therapeutics to treat highly prevalent, blinding diseases with no current effective treatments. Their unique approach is driving first-in-class and best-in-class protein and gene therapy solutions that will significantly impact patients' lives.
In this role, you will join the Client's Gene Therapy Team and contribute to AAV product development, including capsid and protein optimization, plasmid cloning and design, vector production, and analytical evaluation. You will play a key role in advancing the gene therapy pipeline through experimental execution and product development expertise.
Schedule: Standard daytime schedule Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with gene therapy leadership to design and develop gene therapy constructs, including capsid modifications and transgene optimization
- Develop and execute assays for therapeutic protein detection and efficacy (e.g., ELISA, qPCR, cell-based assays)
- Apply literature and novel techniques to gene therapy product design and testing
- Analyze data to inform product selection decisions
- Oversee in vitro and in vivo screening of gene therapy candidates in animal models
- Assist in AAV vector production and analytical testing (e.g., ddPCR, DLS, ELISA)
- Perform plasmid cloning, propagation, and molecular testing (e.g., restriction digest, sequencing)
- Maintain detailed experimental records in an electronic laboratory notebook
- MS with 6+ years or PhD with 3+ years of lab experience in molecular and/or cell-based experiments; gene therapy experience required
- Expertise in protein expression and optimization, including plasmid cloning and regulatory region modification
- Proficiency in nucleic acid/protein analytical techniques (e.g., qPCR/ddPCR, western blotting, ELISA)
- Experience with in vitro and in vivo assay design for gene therapy testing
- Preferred: Experience preparing CMC documents for IND or regulatory submissions
- Strongly preferred: Research-scale AAV vector production experience
- Hands-on experience with aseptic technique and mammalian cell culture
- Skilled in documenting lab results and writing formal study reports
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills
- High integrity, strong work ethic, and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
