Job Summary

Preparation of cytology specimens for review by the cytotechnologists and pathologists. Operation and maintenance of critical processing and screening instruments. General maintenance of the cytopreparatory area. Clerical functions related to reporting, result entry, filing, and charging.

Required Training:  Average typing and basic computer skills;  Ability to work safely with potentially hazardous specimens and chemicals;  Ability to pay close attention to and discern details that are critical to patient care.

Essential Functions
  • Receiving and accessioning of cytology specimens
  • Skilled preparation of pap smear specimens for microscopic review. This will include staining, coverslipping, labelling, and presentation of slides and paperwork to the cytotechnologists and pathologists for both conventional and AutoCyte PREP paps.
  • Skilled preparation of non-gynecologic specimens and fine needle aspirates using good decision-making skills to determine specimen suitability for processing and best preparation method.
  • Operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of all instruments including the highly sophisticated AutoCyte PREP processing system and the Focal Point Automated Primary Screening system.
  • Documentation of stainline maintenance and equipment charts.
  • General maintenance, adjustments and temperature/gauge readings of other instruments/equipment and documentation as required.
  • Preparation of reagent solutions as needed, e.g. 95% alcohol and reagents used with the AutoCyte PREP system.
  • General maintenance and disinfection of work area.
  • Assisting with data collection for statistical reports and quality assurance monitoring.
  • Assessing inventory needs. Ordering supplies.  Restocking supplies in a timely manner.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Retrieving slides and reports as requested.
  • Preparation of monthly “abnormal” case lists and follow-up letters for distribution to the clinicians.
  • Printing previous history for current cases and matching patient history reports with requisitions.
  • Maintaining an up-to-date and efficient filing system for requisitions, slides, batches, and IPC/EPC sheets.
  • Distribution and/or mailing/faxing reports.
  • Exhibits thorough understanding of computer functions needed for daily use.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves problems as situations require.  Notifies system manager of significant problems.
  • Performs assigned duties efficiently and effectively in a timely organized manner.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by authorized personnel or as required in an emergency, e.g. fire or disaster.
  • Telephoning physicians' office or nursing staff for additional information on incomplete requisitions.
  • Responding to telephone calls for test results; specimen collection information, etc.  Promotes good customer relations by responding courteously, effectively and quickly to all requests.
  • Maintains an optimistic and  professional image and exhibits excellent customer relations to patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers.  Shows courtesy, compassion and respect.
  • Conforms to Service Excellence Policy and “House Rules.”
  • Observes all hospital and departmental safety policies and practices.
  • Ensure Hazardous Waste or Hazardous Waste Pharmaceuticals are discarded, stored, and managed with other compatible waste streams in containers that are properly labeled and closed prior to being shipped offsite for proper disposal.  Initial RCRA training is received within 6 months of the hire date and continuing with annual RCRA training.
  • Demonstrates competence to provide developmentally appropriate care/treatment for the following patient population: infant (birth to 1 year), child (1 year through 12 years) adolescent (13 years through 17 years), adult (18 years to 65 years), and geriatric (over 65 years).
