Job Summary

Responsible and accountable for the development, implementation, operations, and evaluation of the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) program. The ECMO Coordinator is a technical expert in the field of Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) practices and is responsible for the oversight of a highly complex patient population and program. This position assumes responsibility for processes and performance improvement opportunities as they relate to the ECMO Program. This includes monitoring the clinical care of patients and providing clinical support to improve patient care and patient outcomes.  As well as assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care delivered. The ECMO Coordinator is a role model, patient advocate, change agent, leader and cost-effective clinician. All responsibilities are carried out in accordance with the mission, vision, strategic imperatives and standards of the LCHD, American Nurses Association standards and specialty professional association standards and in accordance with the provisions set forth by the SC Nurse Practice Act.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing
Minimum Years of Experience: 4 Years of Experience in Acute Care Nursing
Substitutable Education & Experience (Optional): None.
Required Certifications/Licensure: National nursing certification in specialty at time of hire/promotion or must obtain within 6 months of hire/promotion into role. 

Current RN license to practice in the State of South Carolina;
  
Maintains certification in ACLS
Required Training: None

Essential Functions
  • Develops and establishes operational and strategic goals and objectives consistent with ECLS standards of care
  • Provides supervision to ECMO staff and ensures proper standards of care have been implemented
  • Recommends appropriate ECMO staffing levels 
  • Provides expert oversight for the clinical aspects of the ECMO program in collaboration with the Critical Care Medical Director & Critical Care Nursing Director
  • Develop, implement and maintain ECMO policies and procedures
  • Oversees and collects operational and benchmarking data and recommends improvement targets to the Critical Care/ECMO Steering Committee 
  • Monitors clinical processes, outcomes, and system issues related to ECMO care provided
  • Ensure staff are trained on current ECMO standards of care and technology 
  • Recommend and provide oversight for annual ongoing education to ensure competency of the ECMO staff
  • Ensure documentation and reporting requirements are met
  • Maintain proper functioning of equipment and adequate amount of supply par levels
  • Ensure the safe and proper set-up of ECMO equipment and troubleshooting
  • Maintains current competency in pump technology
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintains ECMO budget based on direction provided 
  • Serves as a resource and role model to all members of the patient care team for patient care and professionalism.
  • Identifies, synthesizes, and interprets sources of data using reasonable clinical judgement to respond to dynamic situations in a timely and effective manner 
  • Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential. 
  • Uses ethical decision making processes and advocates for acceptable patient outcomes. 
  • Assures quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards; measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and standards; making or recommending necessary adjustments; following hospital and nursing division's philosophies and standards of care set by state board of nursing, state nurse practice act, and other governing agency regulations. 
  • Recognizes and responds appropriately to complex situations
  • Efficient conflict resolution and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrates effective teamwork skills and maintains a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information; responding to requests; building rapport; participating in team problem-solving methods
  • Serve as back-up to the ECMO Specialist as needed
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies
  • Maintains required certifications. Earns a minimum of 20 hours of continuing education annually within specialty
  • Ensure Hazardous Waste or Hazardous Waste Pharmaceuticals are discarded, stored, and managed with other compatible waste streams in containers that are properly labeled and closed prior to being shipped offsite for proper disposal. Initial RCRA training is received within 6 months of the hire date and continuing with annual RCRA training.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
