Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA) – Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU)

MedStar Medical Group is seeking an experienced Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA) to join the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
MedStar Washington Hospital Center is a 912-bed academic medical center, the largest hospital in the Washington metropolitan region, and home to the nationally recognized MedStar Heart & Vascular Institute. The hospital is a Level I Trauma Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center, regional ECMO referral center, and the region's only Adult Burn Center.
Practice in a high-acuity, mixed medical-surgical CVICU where APPs enjoy meaningful autonomy while collaborating with intensivists and a multidisciplinary team. APPs primarily care for patients recovering from cardiac and vascular surgery, advanced heart failure requiring mechanical circulatory support, heart transplantation, vascular surgery, and critically ill medical cardiology patients.
Position Highlights- Practice within a 54-bed Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit across three dedicated care areas
- Care for patients recovering from cardiac and vascular surgery, heart transplantation, advanced heart failure, mechanical circulatory support, vascular surgery, and complex medical cardiac conditions
- 13-hour day and night shifts with a proportionate blend of day and night coverage
- Collaborative team of 18 physicians and 38 Advanced Practice Providers
- Academic environment with opportunities to work alongside fellows, residents, and multidisciplinary care teams
Dedicated nocturnist opportunities are also available, with a generous nocturnist adjustment applied to either the base annual salary or annual clinical target.
Essential Duties Include
- Perform comprehensive history and physical examinations.
- Establish medical diagnoses and develop treatment plans based on patient history, physical examination, laboratory studies, and diagnostic findings.
- Initiate and manage therapeutic interventions for critically ill patients with respiratory failure, heart failure, shock, renal failure, acid-base disturbances, and other complex critical care conditions.
- Participate in daily multidisciplinary rounds and collaborate with consulting services to provide coordinated, patient-centered care.
- Perform bedside procedures, including placement of central venous, arterial, and non-tunneled dialysis catheters, chest tube insertion, and thoracentesis.
- Ensure safe transitions of care through effective communication during patient handoffs.

- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program
- NCCPA certification (PA) or AGACNP certification (NP)
- Minimum of one year of Critical Care experience as an Advanced Practice Provider required
- Experience performing common critical care procedures preferred
- Current BLS and ACLS certification (or eligible to obtain prior to start)
This position has a hiring range of
USD $135,000.00 - USD $210,000.00 /Yr.
