About the Job

Position Summary

The incumbent in this position is a Department Head who has administrative responsibility and accountability for the management and direction of the operational, personnel and financial activities of Health Information Management. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Administers and maintains all department services in accordance with standards and criteria established by JC, State, Local and Federal agencies to ensure compliance to those external requirements.
  • Assumes overall responsibility (directly or through delegation to other staff members) for personnel management of the Department to include, but not be limited to: interviewing, hiring, orienting, training, scheduling, coaching, counseling, evaluating, promoting and terminating employees.
  • Safeguards and preserves both the medical record and its informational contents against loss, defacement, tampering and unauthorized disclosure in accordance with D.C. laws and regulations.
  • Manages and directs an effective Medical Records Quality Improvement program to ensure compliance with D.C. Licensure, JC accreditation, federal, state and institutional rules and regulations.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communications with peers and supervisors of the Hospital, University and community.
  • Provides adequate support and education on JC standards, study methodologies, significance of corrective action and follow-up evaluation to Hospital and Medical Staff in conducting QA activities, Medical Care and other special/evaluation studies requiring review of the Medical Record. Serves as consultant to GUMC on Health Information Management issues.
  • Assumes overall responsibility for the Tumor Registry activities as it relates to the ACoS.
  • Attends, coordinates and maintains minutes for the Medical Record Committee and also serves as a resource for the Executive Staff.
  • Appraises, forecasts and determines desired set of future conditions and strategies required to achieve the goals and objectives of the organization within incumbent's area of expertise.
  • Formulates, recommends, implements, monitors and controls operational and capital budgets within administrative guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • B.S. Degree in health related field required
  • Master's degree with management concentration preferred

Work Experience:

  • 8-10 years experience with three to five years as director of a health information management department having at least thirty FTEs required
  • Progressive experience in personnel management, communication skills, financial and resource management required

Licenses/Certifications

  • RHIA - Registered Health Information Administrator required upon hire
  • CCS-Certified Coding Specialist required upon hire

This position has a hiring range of

USD $114,004.00 - USD $219,960.00 /Yr.
