General Summary of Position
The Director of Sterile Processing is responsible for strategic leadership operational management and continuous improvement of all sterile processing functions. This role ensures the highest standards of quality patient safety and regulatory compliance while building and sustaining high-performing engaged teams. Collaborates with surgical services infection prevention and other departments to optimize instrument readiness and case flow. Takes part in call coverage due to the 24/7 nature of the Operating Room. Acts as a clinical leader and teaches in-service training courses; and in doing so demonstrates actions and behaviors that facilitate the process of change necessary to support the Peri-operative strategic plan. Ensures high standards of processing of instruments equipment and supplies utilizing Infection Control guidelines AORN standards The Joint Commission and IAHCSMM (International Association of Hospital Central Service and Materials Management

Primary Duties and Responsibilities


  • Supervises and monitors all SPD functions and activities involved in the cleaning preparation sterilizing storage and distribution of supplies and equipment sterilizers aerators exchange carts case carts washer-sterilizers storage cabinets etc. Establishes updates maintains and monitors systems to provide exchange carts instruments case carts procedure trays and specialty equipment to Medstar DR OR's cathode labs PACU's ICU's ER's etc.
  • Monitors the OR Schedule obtains information from surgeons and others to identify actual and potential needs for surgical cases. Communicates with OR Clinical Directors and Patient Care Managers Surgeons and others about supply shortages unavailability for surgical cases explores alternative approaches as directed.
  • Sets work priorities schedules reassigns staff and directs workloads makes or directs daily work assignments completes rounds to monitor and assigns and controls employee overtime work. Recommends hiring or firing and evaluates performance counsels and disciplines identifies personnel problems and reports same to director.
  • Assists and monitors team leaders and staff in high risk areas due to contamination by OR exposure to body fluids jobs of decontaminating sterilizing and wrapping of supplies sets. Ensures sterile instruments and supplies with no cross-contamination are available for OR's and clinics. Assists in establishing and maintaining production standards and containing costs through efficient use of staff and care of equipment.
  • Participates in development of department sanitation and personnel safety plans and determining appropriate levels of supplies instruments and equipment. Participates in developing and improving policies and procedures. Interprets policies and guides team leaders in their implementation. Enforces hospital and department policies and procedures.
  • Assesses and prioritizes needs of clinics operating rooms and emergency rooms and redirects staffing levels to assure adequate coverage is provided. Communicates with director orally and in daily written reports giving information on unit operations department progress unresolved problems personnel issues instrument cart and supply problems and special needs.
  • Leverage SPM analytics and dashboards to monitor real time financial and operational performance including productivity and instrument utilization.
  • Monitors and ensures proper functioning and repair of all equipment including sterilizers and maintains records on each as appropriate. .
  • Sets up and directs daily maintenance of the inventory control system and accounting charges for inventory used. Designs and maintains a current and accurate catalogue of supplies. Generates relevant reports to monitor and track inventory usage and programs inventory par levels on hand-held. Keeps all necessary records updated monitors supply levels and initiates orders for supplies instruments and utensils. Assists and monitors staff in properly completing all inventory sheets and recording all accounting charges for used inventory. Assists in conducting yearly inventory of supplies.
  • Initiates purchase orders and vouchers for the acquisition of supplies and equipment. Keeps records of purchases and supply levels and monitors patient and interdepartmental charges.
  • Assists in the maintenance of data for the Charge Description Master and Lawson systems.
  • Participates in SPD department quality assurance committee and activities. Maintains communication with user department provides information on aseptic technique and other SPD needs meets with team leaders to discuss problems and formulate appropriate corrective actions. Initiates and directs periodic area or shift staff conferences to devise appropriate actions to correct work flow problems.
  • Assists in SPD new employee orientation and on-the-job training in SPD policies and procedures.
  • Teaches and attends in-service training courses. Participates in staff continuing education by assisting the clinical instructor in planning and teaching in-service training courses. Attends workshops seminars and in-service courses on current state-of-the art SPD techniques. Conducts unit/staff meetings to disseminate pertinent information to staff.
  • Demonstrates the use of knowledge skills and abilities attained by reading the appropriate literature and attending related seminars conferences etc. Maintains current certification as a Sterile Processing Technician or Certified Surgical Technician.
  • Attends division meetings and participates on hospital committees and task forces as requested.
  • Influences external departments to implement work flow changes that result in service improvements and cost reductions. Develops interprets and achieves departmental goals through active participation in committee work and task force assignments as needed. Identifies issues presents strategies and acts as a change agent.
  • Monitor monthly financial performance including labor supplies equipment and service contracts; analyzes variances and implement actions as needed
  • Optimize labor productivity through staffing models workload analysis and schedule management while maintaining quality and service levels
  • Minimal Qualifications
    Education
    • Bachelor's degree Nursing required or
    • Bachelor's degree Science/Arts required
    Experience
    • 3-4 years of job related experience prior supervisory experience required
    • Prior Periop experience preferred preferred
    Licenses and Certifications
    • Certification in field of study within 1 Year required or
    • Certified Surgical Technician within 1 Year preferred or
    Knowledge Skills and Abilities
    • Working knowledge of AOR standards OSHA guidelines The Joint Commission and IAHCSMM (International Association of Hospital Central Service and Materials Management).
    • Extensive knowledge of aseptic technique sterilization processes regulatory agency guidelines and technical knowledge of instrumentation and equipment.

    USD $142,064.00 - USD $287,996.00 /Yr.
