About the Job

General Summary of Position
Responsible for and directs the decorative planting and year-round maintenance of hospital grounds parking areas walks and roadways. Supervises and coordinates grounds maintenance with the objective of maintaining the hospital's landscaped and paved areas in a neat and clean condition. Designs and develops landscaping for campus. Maintains lawns flower beds hedges driveways sidewalks and grounds equipment.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities


  • Assists in the development of department goals objectives policies procedures quality standards and safety standards. Ensures compliance with hospital/facility policies and procedures and governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Assists in selecting training orienting and assigning department staff. Develops standards of performance evaluates performance and conducts performance management planning. Initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions. Maintains ongoing communication with office staff to review programs provide feedback discuss new developments and exchange information.
  • Assists in the development and recommendation of department operating budget and ensures that the department operates within the budget.
  • Buys trees shrubs and flowers; negotiating with nurseries to secure healthy specimens. Maintains proper stocks of fertilizer chemicals and other ground care needs and orders when required.
  • Connects and maintains outdoor sprinkling equipment. Waters lawns flowerbeds gardens shrubs and trees.
  • Designs and develops landscaping for campus to include management of lawn care programs. Prepares and grades terrain. Seeds and sods lawns; transplants or plants shrubs plants and trees. Cultivates plants and weeds gardens and flower beds. Mows and trims lawns repairs established lawns or plants new lawns. Prunes trees. Trims shrubs.
  • Designs and oversees flower beds in appropriate seasons. Determines fertilizers insecticides and other treatments to be used and how applications are to be made. Sprays trees shrubs and plants and applies nutrients and fertilizers for lawn and plant growth.
  • Ensures cleanliness upkeep and maintenance of entrances sidewalks and waterfront as needed. Schedules and coordinates activities for the maintenance and care of the hospital grounds. Inspects grounds to ensure safe conditions and makes recommendations for improvements. May make repairs to concrete and asphalt walk and driveways.
  • Ensures implementation of the snow removal teams and related activities.
  • Ensures that time material and work records are complete and submitted at the end of each workday.
  • Manages procurement activities including vendor selection purchasing receiving storage and utilization of equipment materials and supplies. Establishes and maintains contractual services.
  • Mows rakes fertilizes waters weeds seeds trims prunes and transplants trees shrubs and flowers and otherwise cares for lawn keeping grounds in a clean and orderly condition year round.
  • Selects and uses motorized and other grounds keeping equipment. Inspects and performs minor repairs to equipment such as lawn mowers spreaders and plows. Performs preventive and minor corrective maintenance on motorized and manually operated grounds keeping equipment and hospital-owned vehicles.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts as required and service improvement teams.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
    • Minimal Qualifications
    Education
    • High school graduation required or
    • equivalent. required and
    • Vocational school graduation preferred and
    • degree in Horticulture required or
    • State certification in Fertilization and Application preferred
    Experience
    • 3-4 years Supervisory groundskeeping gardening landscaping or related experience required
    Licenses and Certifications
    • DL NUMBER - Driver License Valid and in State (DRLIC) Valid driver's license in the State of Maryland. Upon Hire required
    Knowledge Skills and Abilities
    • Verbal and written communication skills.
    • Basic computer skills preferred.

    This position has a hiring range of

    USD $20.57 - USD $36.27 /Hr.
