General Summary of Position
MedStar Health is looking for a Health Physics Assistant to join our team at MedStar Washington Hospital Center! The ideal candidate will have experience identifying, monitoring and disposing radioactive waste.
As a Health Physics Assistant, you will assist the Radiation Safety Officer or designee with the implementation of the radioactive waste management program.

Primary Duties:
· Monitors medical waste from various sources in the hospital to determine if waste is radioactive. Identifies radioactivity in waste, labels container appropriately and stores for decay in storage until disposed of properly.
· Prepares rooms for I-131 therapy. Monitors rooms where radiation treatments are performed and determines if rooms meet criteria for regular patient use after decontamination process. Performs routine radiation surveys of patients and treatment rooms.
· Receives radioactive material shipments, does appropriate surveys and contamination checks on packages before delivering to respective departments. Also, helps in preparing outgoing shipments.
· Maintains radiation survey instrument calibrations and updates records pertaining to calibrations and repairs of survey instruments per regulation. Maintains Survey meter database. Helps in cleaning up of radioactive material spills. Participates in special NM procedures.
· Performs weekly surveys in areas where radioactive materials are either used or stored to make sure that the radiation levels in those areas are within acceptable regulatory limits. Maintains database for the weekly surveys. Provides Annual Inservice in Radiation Safety and Protection to the Nicklin, Receiving and DES staff.
Qualifications:
· High School Diploma or GED
· 1-2 years of experience identifying, monitoring and disposing radioactive waste
· Associate's degree in radiological science, environmental safety or related field (preferred)
This position has a hiring range of $28.20 - $47.30
