General Summary of Position
Functions as an expert resource, providing guidance to staff members, HR business partners, and management on complex compensation issues. Supports the development and administration of compensation programs and policies designed to attract, motivate, reward, and retain the most qualified employees. Evaluates jobs across the various sectors of MedStar Health; collects and analyzes market data; participates in market surveys conducted by third-party administrators; oversees the job description process; makes appropriate compensation recommendations and provides guidance to Human Resources and management. Leads projects as assigned. Participates in the annual merit and market process.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides analytical in-depth analytical support on compensation-related projects (ie. new business acquisitions and system-wide initiatives).
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Exercises independent judgment and takes actions that may set precedents.
  • As subject matter expert, provides guidance to compensation team members, human resources, and management staff on complex compensation issues. Assists in training and orienting department staff.
  • Assists in developing, administering, and maintaining compensation policies and special pay practices. Interprets and explains compensation-related policies and practices to HR business partners and management. Serves as a consultant to HR and department leaders in designing and implementing special pay programs (premiums, etc.). Collaborates with HR business partners across entities, as appropriate, to ensure that systemness is maintained. Helps ensure achievement of established department goals and objectives and adherence to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Effectively utilizes available software packages to obtain, maintain and report accurate data for analysis. Functions as a super user for the market-pricing system to include designing reports, partnering with HRIS on changes to the PeopleSoft interface, and managing user security.
  • Identifies opportunities for and implements process improvement. Makes recommendations for major changes in compensation programs.
  • Leads special projects from initial implementation through completion as requested.
  • Ensures integrity of compensation-related data through regular audits; researches and notifies HR of the appropriate action to correct discrepancies and ensure compliance. Oversees enhancements to the merit tool. Provides appropriate training and communication to HR staff and users, and provides user support when necessary. Monitors system for potential problems.
  • Maintains up-to-date job descriptions in JDXpert. Reviews requests for new and revised positions. Evaluates jobs based upon market analysis and internal comparisons. Determines grade designations and FLSA classifications; assigns job codes and titles.
  • Monitors trends in the competitive market through networking, research, and review of published surveys and reports. Recommends modifications to ensure programs continue to align with best practices and MedStar's compensation philosophy.
  • Participates in salary surveys conducted by third-party administrators to secure relevant market data. Analyzes and interprets results.
  • Participates in the administration of the annual merit and market process, which includes but is not limited to market pricing each job, making recommendations for change, producing reports and presentations, and implementing approved increases.
  • Works with Payroll HRIS and ERP team members to design and implement system changes required for new/revised policies, pay practices and earnings codes.


  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience required

    Experience

    • 5-7 years compensation analyst experience preferably in a health care environment required

    Licenses and Certifications

    • One of the following certifications is preferred; SHRM-SCP, SHRM-CP, Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR)-HRCI, Professional in Human Resources (PHR)-HRCI or Certified Compensation Professional (CCP)

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Expert knowledge of compensation systems, principles of wage and salary administration and market pricing methodology.
    • Strong knowledge of Federal and State laws governing wage and salary administration.
    • Demonstrated ability to solve a full range of complex problems.
    • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access software applications.
    • Working knowledge of marketing pricing software is strongly preferred.
    • Familiarity with JDXpert preferred.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.


    This position has a hiring range of $80,995 - $152,027
