Position Summary

The Advanced Environmental Services Technician plays a critical role in maintaining a clean, safe, and healing environment throughout Mercy Rehab Hospital. This position requires advanced environmental services knowledge and skills to support infection prevention, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence. The technician performs specialized cleaning and disinfection procedures in patient care and high-risk areas while collaborating with clinical and support staff to ensure exceptional service and patient experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform thorough cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfection of patient rooms, treatment areas, clinical spaces, offices, public areas, and other designated locations according to established standards and procedures.
  • Execute specialized cleaning procedures for isolation rooms, procedure areas, and other high-risk environments to support infection prevention efforts.
  • Change privacy curtains and complete room turnover processes efficiently to support patient flow.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of multiple Environmental Services functional areas and provide operational support as needed.
  • Utilize advanced cleaning equipment and techniques, including steam cleaning equipment and HEPA filtration vacuums.
  • Collaborate with nursing, therapy, and other healthcare teams to prioritize cleaning assignments and respond to urgent requests.
  • Respond promptly to spills, contamination events, and other environmental concerns requiring immediate attention.
  • Monitor inventory levels and maintain adequate supplies of chemicals, disinfectants, cleaning tools, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Assist with the collection, transport, and disposal of regulated medical waste and biohazardous materials in compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Support orientation and training activities for new Environmental Services team members as assigned.
  • Participate in ongoing education and competency training related to infection prevention, environmental safety, and regulatory standards.
  • Assist with patient transfers, room preparation, and other operational activities to support seamless patient care delivery.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, compassion, and excellent customer service when interacting with patients, families, visitors, and coworkers.
  • Adhere to all Mercy policies, safety procedures, confidentiality requirements, and infection control protocols.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred.

Experience

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to perform physical and manual labor tasks in a healthcare environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous Environmental Services experience in a hospital, rehabilitation facility, or healthcare setting.
  • Experience with infection prevention and healthcare cleaning protocols.
  • Experience operating commercial cleaning equipment.
  • Previous customer service experience or experience working with the public.
  • Experience training or mentoring team members.

  • Strong understanding of cleaning and disinfection practices.
  • Knowledge of infection prevention and safety standards.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks effectively.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to push, pull, and/or lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, squat, reach, twist, and grasp frequently.
  • Ability to perform repetitive physical tasks in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
