Overview

The Vermont State Police and Department of Public Safety are seeking two dedicated Victim Services Specialists (VSS) to support victims and their families during criminal investigations and in the aftermath of critical incidents such as unexpected deaths, suicides, and other traumatic events.


Working closely with Vermont State Police detectives, troopers, and the Victim Services Director, the VSS will play a key role in guiding individuals through the criminal justice process and connecting them with essential support and resources. This position requires flexibility, with irregular and extended hours, as well as statewide travel.


We are hiring for two positions: one based in northern Vermont and one in southern Vermont. Please indicate your regional preference in your application.

PUBLIC SAFETY BACKGROUND CHECKS: Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position to include Motor Vehicle/Criminal Records, Personal History, Credit and any additional background check(s).

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in a standard office setting as well as field and courtroom settings. This position requires state-wide response with extensive travel to all VSP barracks. Travel is required for which private means of transportation must be available. Cases will include death investigations and there will be ongoing exposure to traumatic events and scenes.  Must be able to work under pressure and be skilled in supporting victims in traumatic circumstances. There will exposure to dangerous persons including violent offenders.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or higher in human services or related field AND three (3) or more years of experience working with people experiencing acute trauma.

OR

Seven (7) or more years of experience working with people experiencing acute trauma.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree or higher. 

Education, training, certification, or lived experience in trauma-informed care and mental health.

Experience working in the criminal justice system.

Special Requirements

Must be able to be able to respond to critical incidents after hours as needed.
