Overview

The VOSHA Compliance Program Manager ensures the safety of Vermont workers by enforcing safety and health standards in workplaces throughout Vermont. In addition to supervising a team of compliance officers and support staff, the program manager reviews and edits inspection reports, issues citations, and negotiates monetary settlements and hazard abatement with employers. The job requires regular interaction with our federal OSHA partners, including submitting detailed grant requests, managing to a budget, and meeting federal performance standards. The ideal applicant will have experience understanding and interpreting OSHA health and safety standards, be comfortable leading a team, and have the self-confidence and demeanor to constructively engage employers under difficult and potentially confrontational circumstances. Frequent travel and occasional public speaking are required, as is the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both in writing and in person. A commitment to creating a culture of workplace safety is essential.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed largely in a standard office setting, but there are predictable and frequent field trips for which private means of transportation must be available when a fleet vehicle is unavailable. Appearance at evening and weekend meetings may be necessary. Testimony in a court or the VOSHA Review Board regarding enforcement actions may be required. The overall nature of the role predictably will result in situations involving adversary positions, strong opinions, and legal confrontation. Evening and weekend work is probable.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's Degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety, Engineering, or related field AND one (1) year of work experience in the field of industrial hygiene, occupational safety, or compliance/regulatory related work.

OR

Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety, Engineering, or related field AND three (3) years of work experience in the field of industrial hygiene, occupational safety, or compliance/regulatory related work.

OR

Five (5) years or more of work experience in the field of industrial hygiene, occupational safety, or compliance/regulatory related work.
