Description

Under general supervision, the Research Associate II is responsible for primary and secondary research, analyzing and synthesizing data/information, and modeling to support various deliverables. At this level, assumes significantly more writing and modeling responsibilities.  Is responsible for developing a strong understanding of the biotechnology/pharmaceutical sector and Analyst's coverage in order to clearly state and defend the investment thesis for all stocks under coverage.  Must be able to handle basic questions from sales and clients and is beginning to represent team in internal research presentations. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Identify and analyze information from primary (i.e., KOLs, payors, other stakeholders) and secondary (i.e., scientific/clinical literature, company materials, etc.) sources to conceptualize and develop investment thesis to support various client deliverables.
  2. Meets the special projects demands of the senior level Research Analysts. Use all resources to determine and locate relevant data/information.
  3. Develop written product with modest direction from the senior level Research Analyst.
  4. Build and maintain Excel-based financial models (including therapeutic area market models, income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements, and discounted cash flow analysis) to support various deliverables.
  5. Able to evaluate basic valuation methodologies to stocks under coverage and the broader sector.
  6. Develop strong understanding of coverage in order to analyze and react to industry news quickly; develop ability to clearly state and defend the Analyst's investment thesis and outlook for each of the stocks under coverage.
  7. Respond to basic questions from institutional sales and clients regarding covered companies, and industry questions and data requests.
  8. Building and updating comp sheets.
  9. Managing the databases and electronic data services (i.e. Bloomberg, FactSet, EvaluatePharma, IMS, etc.).
  10. Continues to build industry knowledge.
  11. Continues to develop external network (i.e., management teams, investors, etc.).

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Scientific background/education, undergraduate or graduate degree (PhD, MD), strongly preferred; CFA/finance experience a plus.
  2. Modest work experience in consulting, venture capital, finance, biotech, or related areas with a focus on the healthcare space (1 - 4 years) strongly preferred.
  3. Demonstrated interest in the healthcare sector and in financial markets.
  4. Knowledge of rare disease space a plus although other areas also helpful.
  5. Excellent scholastic history (e.g., grade point average).
  6. Attention to detail, a strong work ethic, and ability to multi-task are required.
  7. History of leadership and excellent teamwork abilities.
  8. Clear, concise writing and strong verbal communication skills.
  9. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  10. Willingness to relocate to Boston, MA.
