Tetra Tech is seeking an entry-level Engineer Intern (EI) or Professional Engineer (PE) in Civil/Environmental Engineering for our Ann Arbor or East Lansing, MI offices. This team provides design and construction management services for the City of East Lansing and surrounding municipalities, as well as municipal and industrial clients across the U.S. Applicants with prior internship, municipal, or consulting experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

Position Summary:
As a Civil/Environmental Engineer, you will support the design and construction of wastewater and water utilities, stormwater drainage systems, and other municipal infrastructure projects, as well as industrial wastewater treatment projects. This position provides the opportunity to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across Tetra Tech's offices and contribute to innovative infrastructure solutions.

Essential Job Functions:
The following duties are considered essential to the role. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.

  • Take responsible charge of design on diverse infrastructure projects in water/wastewater treatment and conveyance, including QA/QC responsibility.
  • Work collaboratively with teams across multiple office locations and support projects that may require occasional travel.
  • Engage with infrastructure engineering experts across Tetra Tech's broad U.S. geography.
  • Assist Project Managers in developing business and demonstrating technical expertise to clients.
  • Stay informed of new and innovative approaches to municipal wastewater and water infrastructure design.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering.
  • 1–2 years of experience in civil engineering design, with emphasis on utilities (sewers, water mains, pump stations, site grading).
  • Engineer Intern (EI) certification required, with the goal of achieving Professional Engineer (PE) registration.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license with an excellent driving record that must be maintained throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D or similar design software.

     

  • Familiarity with municipal infrastructure standards and permitting processes. 

     

  • Prior experience supporting design or construction administration for public works or environmental projects.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform fieldwork in varying conditions and on uneven terrain.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and perform light to moderate physical activity, including occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent use of engineering and field inspection equipment.

Work Environment / Environmental Factors:

  • Combination of office and outdoor work settings with variable weather exposure.
  • Moderate noise levels and occasional work on active construction sites or uneven terrain.
  • Use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

Additional Information:

  • Full-time position based in Ann Arbor or East Lansing, MI.
  • Occasional travel may be required for project coordination and site visits.
  • Hybrid work flexibility may be available based on project needs.
