Departmental Overview

The Lawrence Hall of Science is UC Berkeley's public science center. The Lawrence welcomes more than 100,000 visitors every year.


Responsibilities

The Assistant Manager supervises the daily operations of the Visitor Services Desk and the Discovery Store. They write daily staff schedules, manage staff workflow, inspire and assist all staff in selling products, creating a welcoming environment, ensuring visitor satisfaction, and resolving any customer service issues that arise.

  • Create a positive visitor experience by providing excellent customer service, leading staff effort to foster an inclusive, friendly, welcoming style. Resolve customer service issues using predetermined guidelines. Provide service in person, over the phone, and through email.
  • Lead associate staff (clerk/cashiers) in daily operations, opening and closing, approving returns/voids, and other daily managerial duties. Ensure that all staff understand work plans and assignments for the day. Make sure everything is running smoothly and on time. Assign work and reassign work throughout the day according to the needs of the business. Model sales practices, setting an example for associates. Help track associate sales performance and provide coaching.
  • Learn about all products and experiences available to visitors in the public science center. Orient visitors at the beginning of their visit at the Visitor Service Desk. Promote and sell memberships, movie tickets, and planetarium tickets. Help visitors find products they're interested in at the Discovery Store including books, toys, science kits, gifts, and snacks.
  • Operate a cashiering station. Process transactions. Follow UC secure cash handling and PCI compliance policies.
  • Perform administrative tasks like inventory counts, merchandising (product placement and display), reconciliation and paperwork, membership database projects, and the receiving of incoming merchandise.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Enthusiastic, friendly, service oriented.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Supervisory experience in a retail/bank/food service, museum or educational attraction.

Salary & Benefits
  • This is a 100% Limited appointment, with Mid-Level benefits, that ends approximately 4 months from the date of hire. 
  • Limited appointment have less than 1,000 hours in a 12-month period. 
  • Non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.
  • This is not a visa opportunity.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. 

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $26.05 - $30.53 per hour.
