Departmental Overview

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions (OUA) provides a fair opportunity for every applicant to obtain admission to the University, operates in a professional manner that ensures positive staff morale and values hard work and dedication. The team communicates and collaborates effectively, presents a coordinated effort to standardize procedures and document best practices, offer a variety of methods for professional development, and provide first-class customer service in a cost-effective and transparent manner.

Responsibilities

Annual Marketing and Communication:

  • In collaboration with the AVC/Director, OUA communications team and Public Affairs, develop and implement the annual marketing and communication plan. This includes email campaigns, print collateral, social media, SMS, webpages, presentation materials, video content, virtual tour, digital advertising campaigns, calling campaigns, and virtual information sessions.
  • Continually review and oversee the improvement of the OUA website and evaluate emerging tools, technology and services for inclusion in the marketing and communication plan.

Campus Visitation:

  • Develop and implement the campus visitation strategic plan for prospective students and influencers.
  • Ensure the campus tour route, script and ambassador training uphold the values of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
  • Routinely audit the registration process for both campus tours and admissions presentations, ensuring a seamless user experience.
  • Operationalize the flow of tour registration data into Slate and manage all related communications.
  • Oversee the management of the Koret Visitor Center and Campanile.
  • Prioritize group visit requests from the Center for Educational Partnership schools.
  • Coordinate and publish the tour and admissions presentation calendar.
  • Serve as the lead for signature visitation events, including Fall Showcase, Power in Community Day, Cal Day and Golden Bear Welcome.
  • Reports out regularly on campus visit numbers including on-campus event registration.

Customer Service:

  • In collaboration with the Senior Assistant Director of Admission for Visitor Experience, develop training programs for front-line staff and student employees who engage with the public via in-person, phone, and the virtual front desk.
  • Ensure consistent, accurate information about admissions policies and procedures is shared through ongoing training and evaluation of all staff responsible for representing Berkeley.

Application Review:

  • Serve as an experienced reader for first-year and transfer applications.
  • Meet reading expectations, measured by both quantity and quality of reads.
  • Provide expertise in the reading process by participating in quality assurance reviews, leading other seasonal readers, and identifying trends in the overall reading process.

Leadership Team:

  • Serve as a member of the OUA leadership team, which directs all functions of OUA and manages the daily operations of the office.
  • Contribute to the vision, leadership, planning, people management, coordination, and implementation of all customer service, marketing and visitation activities of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
  • Represent the office at conferences and to the public, promoting goodwill and public support for the institution.

Partnerships:

  • Coordinate with partners on and off campus to optimize opportunities for collaboration.
  • Work with campus partners to ensure all marketing and visitation events are organized to best meet OUA goals.
  • Build and maintain relationships related to communications activities.

Supervision:

  • Provide direction to professional staff, support staff, and student workers.
  • Establish expectations and goals, set workload priorities, address human resources issues, and manage performance and motivation.
  • Make decisions on performance, salary actions, hiring decisions and other human resources related issues of managed staff.
  • Comply with University, campus and departmental policies governing performance appraisal and professional development.
  • Monitor the budget impact for managed functional area.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to subordinates on most complex issues, elevating to the Assistant Vice Chancellor/Director as needed.

Other Duties:

  • At certain times of the admissions cycle, support the activities of the office, Enrollment Management and Student Affairs with duties outside of those responsibilities outlined above.

Professional Development:

  • Stay current on changing educational systems and policies.
  • Identify professional development activities that would enhance incumbent's skills, knowledge and or experience. These may include, but are not limited to, attending and/or presenting at conferences.
  • Stay up-to-date on best practices for prospective student communication, parent/family engagement, and counselor communication preferences.
  • Ensure Berkeley communications reflect best practices in reaching first-generation, low income, and historically underrepresented students.
  • Participate in professional organizations in the UC system and on a regional and national level, where appropriate.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years' experience working in college admissions, higher education communications, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with marketing and communications best practices for print, web, and video in higher education recruitment.
  • Knowledge of prospective student database sources, the most effective software/research tools for identifying prospective students, and instruments that analyze the perceptions of admitted students.
  • Knowledge and understanding of state and federal affirmative action law, and ability to determine the legality of admission practices and outreach approaches.
  • Knowledge of trends and new developments in targeted communities and secondary and post-secondary education that may affect application preparation and/or choice.
  • Demonstrated experience and cultural understanding when working with multicultural students and supporters.
  • Excellent project and program management skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and to transform ideas into practical solutions.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Superior judgment and discretion with sensitive and/or confidential issues/information.
  • Advanced knowledge of education theory, policy, practice, and evaluation.

Education/Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant knowledge of and/or ability to learn about the goals and mission of the University as they relate to academic preparation, recruitment, and advanced-standing admission.
  • Significant knowledge regarding and/or ability to learn about UC Berkeley's Colleges/schools general education policies and requisite transfer preparation.
  • Advanced knowledge of fiscal management policies and practices and University personnel management policies and practices.
  • Experience leading, planning and managing campus visitation events.
  • Experience managing a campus visitor center, landmark or equivalent.
  • Bilingual capabilities.

Education/Training:

  • Master's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $116,195.00 - $129,865.00.

  • This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
  • This is a hybrid position, eligible for up to 60% remote capability.
