Department Marketing Statement
The MarCom Team performs a wide variety of multimedia communication and marketing duties related to the mission and goals of Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises (HDAE), which is an integral part of the educational program at UC Santa Barbara. HDAE provides a comprehensive array of essential services, and strives to enhance the quality of life of the University community by providing an environment that is supportive of the educational needs and extracurricular activities of our students.Brief Summary of Job Duties
Under general supervision of the Director of Multimedia Communications & Marketing, performs a wide variety of multimedia communication and marketing duties related to the mission and goals of Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises. HDAE is an auxiliary services operation that houses 10,000 students, faculty, staff and family residents on campus, provides support services for 9,300 students residing in the communities adjacent to the campus, serves 21,000 customers daily in its retail and board dining programs, manages the UCSB Campus Store and University Center, hosts 150,000 guests annually for conferences and meetings, manages a major events center (Events Center), and oversees the administration of transportation, parking and fleet services. Additional responsibilities in the HDAE portfolio include Administrative & Residential Information Technology (ARIT) and The Club & Guest House. HDAE employs 600+ full-time employees and 1,800+ student employees, with annual operating budgets totaling $160 million. HDAE maintains a physical plant of more than 3 million square feet of buildings and 250 acres of grounds and landscaping.
This position plays a key role in the Multimedia Communications & Marketing Team (MarCom) that is responsible for developing, implementing, coordinating and overseeing the division's multimedia communications and marketing strategies and initiatives that may have an impact on the organization and its ability to generate revenue. This includes all major communications for the diverse clientele of Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises including web, print media, digital signage, video, social media, and marketing initiatives. This position requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the capacity to organize, prioritize, and handle a wide variety of responsibilities and projects accurately and consistently. This position also serves as the primary back up in the absence of the Multimedia Communications & Marketing Director.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Knowledge of marketing principles, concepts, strategies and best practices.
- Experience in graphic design, publication preparation, and social media marketing.
- Knowledge of UC Santa Barbara and HDAE's products, services, achievements, mission, vision, goals, objectives and infrastructure.
Satisfactory criminal history background check.

Multimedia Communications & Marketing - 70%
Part of the Multimedia Communications & Marketing (MarCom) Team that is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the division's communications and marketing strategies and initiatives. Collaborates with the MarCom Team on campaigns to promote awareness to students, potential students, parents and other clients such as marketing housing contracts and playing a key role on the Housing Fair committee for UCSB's Open House. With supervisor, reviews and assumes responsibility for requests submitted to the Marketing & Communication Work Request system, which allows departments in HDAE to request various marketing and communication services. Maintains master calendar for all marketing initiatives.
Responsible for HDAE's social media strategy. Required knowledge of a variety of social media platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter, and Tumblr. Reviews social media analytics to better determine message strategy and how to increase target audience engagement and gain more followers. Follows and researches social media trends to stay up-to-date with various algorithm changes to platforms. Researches, oversees and coordinates advertising placements and schedules on social media platforms as well as other advertising channels.
Designs and produces both print and digital publications and other promotional materials that are distributed to HDAE staff, students, potential students, parents, as well as customers of The Club & Guest House and Conference & Hospitality Services, etc. Ensures that branding is consistent with the look and feel of divisional multimedia communications, logos and signage, and ensures alignment with the UCSB visual identity. Establishes and maintains contact with vendors such as printers and photographers.
Designs and produces multimedia content including video, virtual tours, Graphics Interchange Format (GIFs), photography (360 degree, panorama, digital), animation, interactive web content, 3D images and vector images.
In collaboration with supervisor, designs dynamic visual content for DigiKnow, HDAE's digital signage network, to convey messages, themes, culinary offerings, special events and emergencies. Trains DigiKnow customers and student workers to create effective ads. Required knowledge of crafting copy and design principles regarding contrast, fonts, images, and use of animation. Collaborates with supervisor to market DigiKnow as a resource to student groups and campus departments.
Makes front end changes to HDAE's websites, including adding/updating images and graphics to web pages, fixing formatting issues, updating text to reflect accurate information and deadlines, and reviewing analytics for SEO purposes. In collaboration with supervisor and webmaster, monitors SiteImprove to ensure HDAE websites are in compliance with UCSB web accessibility standards. Reviews webmaster emails and responses sent by Front Desk personnel to keep abreast of current issues and ensure good customer service is being provided.
Oversees "HomeBase," the department intranet, and works in partnership with information technology staff and student workers.
In collaboration with the MarCom Team, maintains the department image collection.
Supervision - 20%
- Supervises and mentors 1-2 student assistants responsible for producing a variety of marketing and communication pieces in multiple mediums including web, print media, digital signage, video, and social media.
- Establishes goals, timelines and priorities, assigns and monitors work, manages accountability, coordinates recruitments, hires, and terminations, and offers career guidance
Special Tasks - 10%
Performs special duties as designated by Supervisor.
Participates on task-specific teams or leads special projects as needed.
Participates in various department and University committees.
Serves on committees to help coordinate special events such as quarterly town hall meetings and annual service awards ceremony.
Serves on Housing's spring Open House committee.
Participates in HDAE's Arts & Culture Committee to bring art into the UCSB housing communities.
Affirms and implements the departmental Educational Equity Plan reflecting a systematic approach to preparing both students and staff for success in a multi-cultural society.
Affirms and implements the departmental Strategic Plan providing goals and objectives that relate to the vision statements that define the HDAE organization.
Affirms and implements the Standards for Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises.
Reviews status of job tasks and responsibilities with supervisor on a regular basis.
