The Undergraduate Academic Advisor will work in a team of three undergraduate advising staff handling Statistics and Data Science majors within the Department of Statistics, in close collaboration with the Undergraduate Committee and the vice-chair of Undergraduate Affairs. The position is based in the Statistics Department, an academic unit within the Division of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, in the College of Letters and Science. The department provides instructional, research, and outreach programs. The department currently has 26 full-time faculty, 6 emeriti faculty, 6 lecturers, 150 graduate students, approximately 1100 undergraduate majors, and 10 career staff. Job Summary

Under general supervision, responsible for providing advising and undergraduate program administration in the College of Letters and Science for Statistics and Data Science. Provide comprehensive, advanced academic advising on a wide range of complex issues to undergraduate students in the departmental majors and support faculty members. Independently handle orientation processes, including freshman and transfer students. Interpret and implement policies and administer undergraduate activities for the department. Work with faculty on program development and administration. Manage quality assessment and policy development. In partnership with all academic advising units and academic success initiatives, work to implement campus-wide academic advising initiatives and act as the representative of the unit in discussions with other student-oriented units, including those housed in other undergraduate colleges, undergraduate education, or student affairs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Physical Demands: Work at desk for several hours at a time.
  • Lifting Requirements: Lift paper products weighing up to 25 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

·       Work in an area of heavy student interruptions and work at a computer for long periods of time.

·       Work occasional overtime including evenings, and weekends for department and outreach events including Commencement, Aggie Day, and Picnic Day.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

·       Experience analyzing and applying university, college, major, and general education requirements in an education setting.

·       Experience writing, editing, and proofreading to answer correspondence, write reports, and develop informational materials.

·       Experience developing and executing workshops and presentations in large and small group settings with interpersonal and communication skills to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and the public.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques and academic philosophies, specifically undergraduate students in a university or higher education environment.

·       Knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles, including the challenges faced by and needs of underrepresented students in higher education.

·       Advanced skills using a variety of computer software including but not limited to word processing, spreadsheets, database, e-mail, and web browsers.

·       Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to present materials in front of groups, lead workshops and forums and organize student orientation and career events.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:   

·       Experience with diverse student populations, identifying and analyzing specific needs of those populations, and developing/adjusting programming to meet those needs.

·       Experience in confronting a variety of difficult situations and students in distress and making appropriate referrals.

·       Experience with university-specific computer application programs related to academic planning, tracking student data, and preparing official major certifications (including Banner, OASIS, SISWEB, MyDegree, and Schedule Builder).

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Advanced working knowledge of university registration procedures, transfer admissions criteria and applicability of credit from other institutions, university, college, major, general education and NCAA policy requirements and other policies.

·       Knowledge of policies and laws regarding confidentiality of student records and knowledge of State and Federal Laws governing confidentiality of student records and University policies regarding privacy of Information.
