As part of the statewide UC Master Food Preserver Program, the Community Education Specialist 4 (CES4) will manage all aspects of implementing a USDA Specialty Crop Block grant to create a new statewide virtual delivery program. The CES4 will provide oversight for 50-75 volunteers participating remotely. All volunteer activity will be online, as will all educational outreach activities. The position will include travel to several sites to conduct in-person training labs, planned and delivered by the CES4.

The CES4 will use advanced technical expertise and program management concepts to provide deliverables of the grant funded program, including:

  • Use the existing statewide online training program to certify at least 50 UC Master Food Preserver Virtual Delivery Volunteers.
  • Develop a marketing and education plan for a two-year series of online specialty crop food education and preservation events and educational outreach.
  • Develop and conduct multiple monthly online educational events, with a goal of completing at least 42 events by the end of the grant. (These events will be delivered by the program's volunteers, supervised by the CES4.)
  • Create an online Helpline system to answer food safety and food preservation questions about specialty crop products. (The Helpline system will be staffed by the program's volunteers, supervised by the CES4.)
  • Cultivate an active social media presence for the statewide UC Master Food Preserver Program. (Social media content will be developed by the program's volunteers, supervised by the CES4.)
  • Create a statewide UC Master Food Preserver online educational newsletter. (Content will be created by the program's volunteers, supervised by the CES4.)

The CES4 will analyze and develop statewide training deliverables and evaluate progress towards the grant's objectives and deliverables. Works on multiple complex program deliverables, where analysis of situations requires an in-depth evaluation and understanding of program's strategies and objectives. Exercises judgment in selecting methods and techniques for program development, data analysis, and progress. Uses strong project management skills to oversee multiple volunteer teams. Serves as lead and subject matter expert for online delivery of educational content. Food preservation experience not a requirement as the CES4 will attend the food preservation certification training program.

This position is a contract appointment that is 100% fixed, starting from the date of hire and ending on 6/30/2026.

The home department is the Master Food Preserver Program. While this position normally is based in Davis, CA, this position is eligible for hybrid flexible work arrangements, for applicants living in the State of California, at this time. Please note that hybrid flexible work arrangements are subject to change by the University. This position will include occasional visits to other offices across California as needed for in-person volunteer training and program coordination.

Pay Scale: $56,800.00/year to $78,000.00/year

Program Management

  • Establish and manage all aspects of a new statewide UC Master Food Preserver virtual delivery program. Provide long range strategic planning for implementation and post-grant sustainability.
  • Develop a marketing and implementation plan for a two-year series of online specialty crop food safety and preservation events, a statewide helpline system, newsletter, and social media presence.
  • Develop new program curriculum for online class delivery for home food safety and preservation of specialty crop products.
  • Network and build partnerships with specialty crop growers associations to increase project beneficiaries.
  • Consult with and participate in statewide program management team regarding program activities, outreach and extension.
  • Manage grant budget, including training supplies and travel expenses.

Volunteer Management

  • Establish program leadership roles and recruit committee members. Lead program wide meetings.
  • Oversee all Master Food Preserver committees including: recruitment and training, online public classes and workshops, videos and reels production, social media content, helpline and FAQ system, and newsletter creation and delivery.
  • Ensure Master Food Preserver projects are within scope of program and grant objectives.
  • Provide continuing education opportunities for Master Food Preserver Volunteers.
  • Maintain records of all Master Food Preserver's volunteer hours, continuing education hours and project activities. Maintain data in the Volunteer Management System website and provide statistics to statewide UC Master Food Preserver Program office, as requested.
  • Supervise annual volunteer reappointment process.
  • Ensure compliance with the statewide UC Master Food Preserver Administrative Handbook, Branding Policy, Statewide Program Guidelines, and grant's scope of work.

Volunteer Training

  • Oversee new volunteer training program, including recruitment, mentors, and in-person labs.
  • Provide Master Food Preserver Help Line training and supervise the Help Line activity, including reviewing Help Line log and email for accuracy of information, completeness of documentation and identifying subjects for further training.
  • Provide training to volunteers in the use of the Volunteer Management System website.
  • Identify and schedule science and industry subject matter experts to provide continuing education opportunities for volunteers.

Grant and Program Evaluation

  • Identify strategies for measuring impact results for classes, interactive workshops, multiple helpline formats, social media, and statewide newsletter.
  • Independently gather and analyze program evaluation and statistical data to provide results to statewide program leadership.
  • Communicate with statewide UC Master Food Preserver Program Manager regularly regarding financial, program, and procedural matters.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Advanced organizational skills to meet numerous established deadlines as well as the flexibility to respond to unforeseen requests
  • Remote management experience, preferably with volunteers
  • High-level interpersonal and communication skills to build rapport and trust with diverse volunteer and public clientele base
  • Computer skills including fluency with Microsoft Office Suite software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), social media platforms, and video creation
  • Advanced verbal, written and presentation skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified UC Master Food Preserver or food preservation experience 
  • Bilingual skills (English/Spanish)
  • Experience working independently to assess and establish effective administrative systems to maintain a high level of productivity
  • Experience promoting online events

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Travel including travel outside normal business hours may be requested.
  • Overtime and occasional weekend work as needed, usually on short notice to meet operational needs may be requested.
  • Must possess valid California Driver's License to drive a County or University vehicle. Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed, proof of liability damage insurance on vehicle used is required. Reimbursement of job-related travel will be reimbursed according to University policies.
