Working Hours: 7am - 3:30pm Shift: 1st shift Position Reports to: Director of Dietary and EVS Services                       

Department Description:  Wilson Health's Environmental Services Department is staffed with highly trained support service staff responsible for managing the cleaning and disinfecting of medical equipment, patient rooms and other common areas throughout the hospital.  This department is the main defense against serious infections that may linger on surfaces throughout the facility.  

Job Summary: According to established procedures, cleans and services building areas, performs a variety of environmental services duties to maintain the hospital in a neat, orderly and sanitary condition.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Manage EVS team members, shifts, and specific care areas; assist in hiring, promotions, and performance evaluations; coach staff on infection control and safety protocols.
  • Ensure cleaning, sanitation, and aesthetics meet hospital standards and guidelines (CDC, ACHC, Environment of Care, Infection Control);
  • Conduct rounding activities, evaluate service levels, and implement improvement initiatives; prepare reports documenting results and collaborate with Director to enhance performance.
  • Oversee inventory, ordering of consumables, equipment maintenance, and subcontractor services; manage schedules, vacation, and holiday coverage
  • Always observes established isolation and aseptic techniques in accordance with departmental policy and procedure.
  • Ensure adherence to safety, risk management, infection control, and sanitation regulations; supervise proper waste disposal according to legal standards
  • Coordinate staffing changes and respond to multiple priorities to minimize disruption in hospital operations
  • Seeks out work that needs to be done, demonstrates alertness to areas needing attention.
  • Consistently demonstrates an awareness and concern for patient safety, always uses caution signs as appropriate.
  • Displays courtesy at all times with patients, visitors and co-workers.
  • Demonstrates skills and consideration in completing assigned duties without interference to those responsible for direct patient care.
  • Meets deadlines in daily responsibilities and special projects; demonstrates ability to recognize, establish and deal with priorities.
  • Replenishes supplies as required, such as paper products, etc.
  • Demonstrates ability to operate all types of cleaning equipment, mechanical and electrical in a safe manner.Notifies supervisor of equipment malfunction, reports any potential safety hazards to supervisor.

SUPPLY INVENTORY 

  • Monitors and maintains appropriate inventory levels of cleaning supplies, disinfectants, chemicals, paper products, personal protective equipment (PPE), and other Environmental Services supplies to support daily operations.
  • Conducts routine inventory checks and identifies supply needs before shortages occur.
  • Coordinates the ordering, receiving, storage, and distribution of Environmental Services supplies in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Ensures cleaning chemicals and supplies are properly labeled, stored, and handled according to manufacturer instructions, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and applicable safety requirements.
  • Monitors supply usage to promote appropriate utilization, minimize waste, and control departmental costs.
  • Ensures adequate supplies are available for patient care areas, isolation rooms, public spaces, offices, and other assigned areas.
  • Maintains organized and sanitary supply rooms, closets, carts, and storage areas.
  • Monitors expiration dates and product condition and removes expired, damaged, or inappropriate products from use.
  • Communicates supply shortages, product concerns, or unusual usage trends to the Director and assists in identifying appropriate solutions or alternative products.
  • Works with vendors and other departments, as appropriate, to address supply needs, product availability, and equipment or service concerns.
PERFORMS ADDITIONAL DUTIES AS ASSIGNED WITHIN SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY. 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

The Environmental Services Supervisor must demonstrate:

  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills with the ability to direct, coach, motivate, and hold team members accountable.
  • Knowledge of Environmental Services practices, including cleaning, disinfecting, sanitation, floor care, waste handling, and proper use of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
  • Understanding of infection prevention practices, isolation precautions, hand hygiene, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and procedures designed to prevent the spread of infection in a healthcare environment.
  • Knowledge of healthcare Environmental Services standards and applicable requirements related to Environment of Care, infection prevention, sanitation, workplace safety, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to understand and follow Safety Data Sheets (SDS), chemical labeling requirements, dilution instructions, and safe chemical handling procedures.
  • Ability to oversee the proper collection, handling, transportation, and disposal of general waste, regulated medical waste, sharps, and other waste streams according to organizational policies and applicable requirements.
  • Ability to coordinate staffing assignments, schedules, call-off coverage, vacations, holidays, and changing departmental priorities while maintaining adequate coverage.
  • Ability to conduct environmental rounds and inspections, recognize deficiencies, document findings, and ensure appropriate corrective action.
  • Ability to monitor employee performance and provide effective coaching, training, recognition, and corrective feedback.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to urgent cleaning needs, spills, isolation rooms, patient discharges, staffing changes, and other unexpected operational needs.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to communicate professionally with patients, visitors, employees, physicians, leadership, and other departments.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality when working in patient care areas and when exposed to confidential patient or employee information.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and make appropriate decisions within established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to operate Environmental Services equipment safely and provide instruction to employees regarding proper equipment operation.
  • Ability to maintain and monitor departmental inventory, supplies, equipment, and related records.
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to use email, scheduling systems, electronic documentation, and Microsoft Office applications or similar programs.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain reports, inspection results, staffing documentation, and other departmental records.
  • Demonstrated dependability, initiative, attention to detail, and commitment to maintaining a safe, clean, sanitary, and welcoming healthcare environment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and adjust schedules when necessary to support departmental and hospital operations.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of Environmental Services, housekeeping, custodial, facilities, or related experience required, preferably within a hospital, healthcare, long-term care, or other regulated environment.
  • Previous lead, supervisory, or management experience preferred.
  • Previous experience in a hospital or healthcare Environmental Services department strongly preferred.
  • Experience supervising or coordinating employee schedules, daily assignments, staffing coverage, and departmental workflow preferred.
  • Experience training, coaching, and providing performance feedback to employees preferred.
  • Experience with healthcare cleaning and disinfection procedures, including patient rooms, isolation rooms, clinical areas, public areas, and high-touch surfaces preferred.
  • Knowledge of infection prevention practices, isolation procedures, bloodborne pathogen precautions, PPE requirements, and healthcare sanitation standards preferred.
  • Experience conducting environmental rounds, cleanliness inspections, quality audits, or other performance monitoring activities preferred.
  • Experience with Environmental Services equipment, cleaning chemicals, floor care equipment, and safe chemical handling preferred.
  • Experience with supply inventory, ordering, equipment maintenance, and vendor or subcontractor coordination preferred.
  • Previous experience working within regulatory or accreditation standards applicable to healthcare facilities preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform the position may be considered.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Three (3) or more years of Environmental Services experience in a healthcare setting.
  • One (1) or more years of experience in a lead, supervisory, or management capacity.
  • Previous experience supervising Environmental Services employees across multiple shifts or patient care areas.
  • Knowledge of hospital infection prevention and Environment of Care requirements.
  • Experience with employee scheduling, performance evaluations, coaching, corrective action, and staff development.
  • Experience with quality assurance programs, environmental rounding, audits, and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Experience managing departmental supplies, inventory, equipment, and operating expenses.
  • Familiarity with healthcare regulatory and accreditation requirements related to Environmental Services.
  • Environmental Services, infection prevention, healthcare cleaning, or related professional certification is preferred but not required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions short correspondences, and memos. Ability to read a limited number of two or three syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.
  • Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers , staff members, patients, patient families, and the general public. This would include the following age groups: pediatric, adolescent, young-middle aged adult and geriatric.
