About the role
The principal function of the Continuous Improvement Manager is to work with all the departments of the Lake Charles Alcoa Plant to implement continuous improvement applying Alcoa Business System (ABS) or lean manufacturing techniques and concepts. In this role, the incumbent will be required to train employees on the fundamentals of the ABS or continuous improvement principles and work with all levels of the organization implementing ABS techniques at the floor level up through every level of the organization. Most meaningfully is to make sure that continuous improvement becomes instilled within the entire organization. The CI Manager will be evaluated on their ability to improve the efficiency, reduce cost, and make the best use of lean manufacturing on the shop floor.
Job duties
- Lead the carbon plant, safety, IT, human resources and maintenance organization through the implementation and deployment of ABS systems to achieve Plant business objectives.
- Align process development initiatives by applying validated methodologies and core operating standards.
- Capture opportunities in the Lake Charles value stream through support and collaboration with all departments. Ensure savings are detailed in Alcoa's system (DI System).
- Establish and direct continuous improvement project work related to process improvements, cost initiatives, business plans, accounting issues, and industrial engineering studies within all departments.
- Aid the production departments in developing and forecasting the capital budget and operating costs in conjunction with the plant manager
- Assist, support, train and push all levels of the organization from Union employees, supervisors, managers, human resources through to the location manager to find opportunities and develop action plans to increase efficiencies by creating room to collaborate applying A3s, Rules in Use, standardized work, problem solving and the full complement of ABS systems.
- Establish ownership and commitment for ABS deployment through coaching and teaching ABS principles and systems to every level of the Lake Charles operations workforce
- Serve as a technical network for the CoE (corporate process and lean help chain).
- Responsible for accelerating the rate of change in the organization through process improvements, cost reductions and implementing ABS systems to highlight opportunities in the customer-supplier connections.
- Function as a powerful change agent throughout the organization, by implementing, developing, and sustaining process management along with quality systems.
- Accountable to provide the appropriate ABS and people training to the organization to ensure leaders have the required knowledge to support the value stream and achieve business goals.
- Develop and implement business strategies for all departments that contribute to the plant business objectives relating to optimizing production output and reducing manufacturing costs.
- Evaluate existing processes of operations for efficiency and make recommendations for improvements.
- Support the development of the annual operating plans and department budgets with the Manufacturing Manager and the Lead Team.
Education required
Bachelor's degree required. Engineering, Project Management, or similar preferred
Experience required
- Prior leadership in a production department is strongly preferred.
- Knowledge and demonstrated experience in the production processes and the implementation of CI systems are required.
- Confirmed ability in providing leadership, creating ownership, building collaboration, achieving results, resolving conflict, and inspiring change is required.
- Strong analytical and organizational skill required.
- Strong Project Management Skills required.
- Ability to stand/walk and sit/stand for long periods of time required.
- A minimum of four (4) years of process improvement, department management with intimate knowledge of the budgets, & building/carrying out processes.
- Ten (10) years of work-related experience in the smelting business preferred.
- Strong computer skills are required, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook/Calendar.
Communication skills required
Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with team members and management.
