Position Overview
Reporting to the VP Strategic Aggregate Operations, South Division and will be responsible for the direct oversight and management of staff and subcontractors working on large and diverse mining projects. Much of the work required is related to offsite clean hard fill and/or soils material placed on our sites. The incumbent will set deadlines, write project scopes, basis of design, request for quotation, develop work breakdown structures, assign responsibilities, monitor execution, and provides status updates on a frequent basis to assigned division steering committee. Other areas of responsibility will include sustainability opportunities (water, energy, material, etc.).and cross-coordination with our Environmental Department.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

To be successful in this role, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily as outlined:

 

  • Ensures project site safety, environmental compliance, and reporting. Works with HSE professionals to ensure assigned contractors for projects conform to required health and safety procedures and practices, with a focus on risk assessment, as well as oversight for work completed by contractors.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of Division goals, objectives, policies, and procedures; review and approve policies and procedures of the waste management operations unit.
  • Direct, oversee and participate in the development of the fill and soils management operations plan; assign work activities, projects, and programs; monitor workflow of the operations unit; review and evaluate work products, methods, and procedures.
  • Design material placement areas to comply with local and state regulations, while focusing on end-of-life use (reclamation obligations).
  • Coordinate materials management activities including the operation, maintenance, repair, and upkeep of materials areas and administration of associated contracts.
  • Perform regular environmental audits of any material brought on Shelly South sites in conjunction with HSE requirements.
  • Manage profit and loss for materials management business unit and look for ways to enhance EBITDA.
  • Assist in preparing the budget including costs analysis, and forecasting; assist in budget implementation; participate in the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Interface with outside agencies, organizations, and contractors; participate in outside community and professional groups and committees; provide technical assistance, as necessary.
  • Develop a thorough document control process (cost management, construction drawings, etc.) as well as documentation and tracking of lessons learned for the purpose of improving future performance.
  • Research, prepare, and present technical and administrative reports; prepare written correspondence.
  • Promote the deployment of latest technology to improve efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.
  • Investigate complaints, recommend, and ensure implementation of corrective action for resolution.
  • Assist and support scale operations and have a clear understanding of systems utilized.
  • Assist and support ongoing efforts for building a sustainability future, such duties may include water re-use studies, effective use of energy in our plants, material recycling (recycled concrete), etc.
  • Support the team as needed with land and / or company acquisitions to help build our company profile.
  • Adhere to all CRH, OSHA, and MSHA rules and regulations at all times and wear proper safety equipment while on plant grounds.

  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Report to the assigned job site ready to begin work at the designated start time.

  • Strict adherence to Shelly Company policies and procedures as outlined in the Company Book of Policies.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required. 
  • Timely and regular attendance is an expectation of performance for all Shelly Company employees. Employees will be held accountable for adhering to their workplace schedule.
  • Assumes additional responsibilities as directed.
Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S. or B.E.) from four-year college / university or equivalent experience preferred
  • Minmum of 3 years' experience with increasing responsibility in mining, construction, and/or operations, including two years of supervisory responsibility.
  • Experience in building trust and coaching a diverse team.
  • Strong ability to gain trust and create alignment across the organization to help drive project execution

 

 

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Strong values and high standards of ethics, integrity, and trust.
  • Proficient in English written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to read, write and understand warning labels, instructions, signs, etc.
  • Ability to understand engineering drawings and associated calculations.
  • Surveying experience with recent technologies (drone, rovers, grade control, etc.)
  • Knowledge of advanced computer skills including Microsoft Office Products, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, AutoCAD, etc.
  • Strong financial, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong negotiation and project management skills.
  • Business acumen in manufacturing, distribution and/or construction operations.
  • Strong action orientation and drive for results.
  • Strong oral/written communication, presentation and listening skills.
  • The ability to deal with ambiguity and facilitate change.
  • The ability to lead effective teams.

 

Work Requirements

  • Travel 25% +/-
  • Must be 18 years in age or older.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA. Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position is: Safety Glasses, Safety (hard toe) Shoes, and Coveralls.
  • Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.

  • Able to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to manipulate objects or controls, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and hear.
  • May require standing for extended periods of time.
  • Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to hold weights of 5-10lbs in a stretched arm position for extended periods of time.
  • Able to climb ladders or stairs and to work at heights.
  • Able to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time.
